Camping in 1st Gen Runner--Bed length?

Hello All,

I would like to know if anyone here knows the length from the closed tailgate to the back of the front seats on a 1st gen 4runner.

I ask because I am thinking about getting one and building a bed platform in it, maybe up to the height of the wheel well. I have friends who have done the same thing in a mid 90s Tacoma pickup with a canopy, but I like the older trucks

Also, if I were to do this, I plan on putting a large cargo box on top for storing all my gear.

I dream of driving out to trailheads and climbing areas and crashing in the back.

Please post up if you've got info or have done something similar!

It is about 73" from front to back. On my '85 the rear seat doesn't fold down completely flat. I'm not sure if that is normal. If you plan to remove the rear seat you'll need to keep in mind that the floor pan dips down under the rear seat.
