Camping spot suggestions in CA or surrounding states

Hoping to get a RTT soon. What are some good spots in CA or the surrounding states to set up camp? Can you just pull off a road and set up camp anywhere or are there rules and regulations? Never had a RTT before, so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. TIA

You might get a better response in the SoCal forum.

There are rules and regs at many of the state parks with dedicated camp sites. I'll prob be hitting up Joshua Tree, Red Rock Canyon, Jalama Beach, South Carlsbad Beach. But first I'm taking the wife and 17 mo old son to O'Neill Regional Park in OC to just try out the RTT closer to home.

There are a lot of places in The Tahoe National Forest and the surrounding area where you can just pull up and camp out.

Been to all those places... never not had a good time.

Word of advise... buy a trail book and a GPS unit. Valuable resource
