Camping Tents

Have a 6 person Coleman instantup tent. Perfect for 2 people. This was a trip to Yellowstone. Really want to find a good price on a used RTT so I can upgrade.

I like REI tents. Good quality, they can be found for cheap when on sale, and a lifetime warranty if you break a zipper or something. And there are a zillion choices.

That Turbo Tent Pine Deluxe that @Mgyver posted looks awesome for truck camping due to it's weight. Looking into those now as I actually don't have a truck camping ground tent anymore. I've been so spoiled with the Flippac camper on my Tacoma that I haven't need a ground tent in years.

We ended up buying a Kodiak 10x10. This thing is STOUT. It's big and heavy in the back of the truck, but plenty of room for four inside and we'll never fear weather again.

Another option is the 30 second tent from OzTent. They're pretty expensive, and I'm sure you can get a Chinese knock for a cheaper price, but the design is awesome. Oztent Range [MENTION=73515]ajonesnv[/MENTION] has a 30 Second styled tent and it sets up very quick and withstands the elements well. They have a few sizes too and I think their biggest is 8-1/2" x 8-1/2". The upside of my Turbo Tent is that you can get it in a bigger size (8x8 or 10x10) and all the walls are mostly vertical which accommodates my bunk cots well, but the 30 sec tent sets up much faster. If I was going to be sleeping on an air mattress or sleeping pads, or single cots then I would very seriously consider the 30 sec tent.

I've got a Nemo Galaxi 3P that I got on sale for a great deal--absolutely love it. It is a tad heavy for backpacking, but for car camping it's awesome for my wife and I and our lab.

Tons of little features that I'd never have thought of. We have one of their Pawprints that snaps in to the floor and provides a protective barrier from the dog's nails.

I've got a cheap Walmart special that I bought 7 or 8 years ago. It's been put through the paces and has stayed together well. Think it's a 6 man, has enough room to set up two full size cots, windows on both sides, open top w/ rain fly. You can kind of see a size comparison next to the 4runner. 2nd tent from the left in front of the runner.

I've used OZ Tents in the past and they are amazing but the smallest they will pack is still quite long if you intend to store it inside the vehicle. I'm still keen on getting to finger poke a Turbo tent like yours so that when we bring my sons cousins and friends along they can have a place to sleep - not next to me - as well.

I'm keeping the Tacoma but selling the Flippac so that I can buy a smaller AT Habitat for solo outings or when it's just my son and I. We've ordered a purpose built off-road camper trailer so that "Household 6" can pull it with her new 4Runner for family outings. Regardless, this thread has given me some good ideas to research. Thanks.

I need a compact tent for extreme conditions, but for car camping where I would not have to carry the tent, also really like big REI tents with full-coverage fly, for 3 seasons. I prefer the ones with simple-crisscrossing poles, not the ones with the "Hubs"- I don't trust those.

Kelty, like REI, also makes good value tent where you are not paying for the logo.

The ARB add a room attaches to your awning. Inexpensive and well made. This has it's own roof, floor and 4 walls- 2 doors, one of which lines up with the rear passenger door. Windows on the other sides with their own awnings and screens, vent windows and power port holes.

I sleep in the truck and use this room to get out of the weather, but I have slept in the room itself...

Recently picked up the Rei Kingdom 6 and "connect tech garage". This thing is huge and the add on gives more shade or protection from the weather. The fly has a full size vestibule on the back and the fly itself can be configured several different ways. The inside has a zipable "room divider" so with the 2 doors on the tent you can have some separation. This is first Rei brand purchase and am very happy with the quality for the price

I have a Fiamma awning and they use a type of captive cord - maybe 8 to 10 mm in diameter - that slides into a channel along the bottom edge of the awning end bar. Works fairly well but they don't really offer anything like what you've shown in your pictures.

It's really a good design!
First you setup the awning.
The Room slides into a channel where the awning is attached to the truck. ARB provides a flap that slides into a channel on the front of the awning (the piece where the legs fold out). This flap stays in place all the time and the front of the room zips onto it.
After these steps are complete it's just a matter of clips to the legs and horizontal support poles.
Stake it down and all is good!

Here's a pic of the inside- it was 18 degrees out when I took this picture- with the little heater in the room it was 50 degrees- and I had it on the "low" setting...

At 7.5 lbs it's on the heavy side but it's very well built, assembles quickly and the double wall configuration manages condensation and drafts effectively.

I've spent several nights in this tent at (or just a touch below) 30F and it has constantly held 50F internally.

It's free standing though you do have to stake the vestibule if you want to use it. Otherwise, they can be rolled back out of the way.

Easily accommodates 2 people and a couple 70lb dogs.

For me, it depends on where I am going, how long I'll be there and what my needs will be.

For shorter trips or more remote photo-locations, I'll go with my REI Half-Dome 2+ tent .

For photo-shoots where I'll be on-location for a few days, I will use my REI Kingdom 6 tent with additional vestibule connected . This allows me to have a sleeping quarters and a place to relax, do post-processing, etc.

I can get the Half-Dome 2+ set up in <5 minutes. The Kingdom 6 takes me about 15 minutes.

I bought a Ozark Trails 7 person and only used it once. It's OK but at 14 x 9.5' it's hard to find a large enough spot of ground to set it up.

I got a campsite reserved for Yosemite in July so I bought a Coleman instant 3 dome. It is on it's way.

My wife is afraid of the bears so we might end up using it for storage and

depending on how far away the campsite bathroom is and sleeping in the back of the 4Runner. I have a twin Coleman air matress I bought after doing that at Idyllwild without one.

Loving my new Marmot Limelight 3. Just spent a week in it down in Bigbend Texas. Never stayed in the same spot twice, got real used to setting it up and taking it down. Hands down, the easiest tent to assemble I have ever seen, can be put up in the dark in less than 2 minutes.

Not a great pic (and sorry don't know how to flip it) but awesome camping spot in the Uintas and even better tent. It's a Kelty Pro 3 that I snagged on steepandcheep for like $120 3 years ago. Fits GF and I plus 2 giant dogs all curled up, and the vestibule allows space for gear. The areas we go tend to sprinkle a lot and rain on and off, and gets pretty cold at night but the thing has been solid.
