can a catalytic converter cause sputtering?

Hey guys I just cleaned my '90 with the sea foam process, and I noticed a leak and a tiny bit of smoke coming from where the catalytic converter connects. I tried the sea foam to see if it would get rid of my sputtering problem I'm currently having. It will not rev over 1800-2000 rpm with out dying down. Could this have something to with the catalytic converter? Thanks.

Absolutely! The catalyst in the convertor is made from ceramic material which can break apart (especially with repeated off road use) and clog the output of the cat. This will significantly reduce power from your engine.

Mmmmm....maybe. Are you getting a CEL? If so, what are the codes?

It did come on for a day or two then went away, im not sure if the codes were stored. I've been having a problem with local shops not having the right connector for the test. Also, a few mechanics said it wouldn't be an o2 sensor. The sputter seems to extreme to be that. Called the toyota dealer they say it could be throttle sensor? or something with the throttle body.

Well, it is possible that it is the TPS, however they will usually just have a low idle or lagging throttle.

You should be able to go to most larger auto parts stores and have them read it...even if it is a few days old. They just need an OBD2 reader. They probably wont charge you anything either...
