can a subwoofer be placed in a SR5?

You could probably get it done. It depends on the depth of the sub and how much room you have in the cubby hole.
BTW, the sub comes with the 10 speaker JBL system. Its not only for SE or LE owners

No way, not nearly deep enough. Especially a JL sub, that would never fit. One possibility is to build a box that sits there, and use part of that compartment area for the magnet of the sub.

Actually, I'm going to chime in and disagree. I haven't had it done just yet, but after speaking with Hi-Fi Buys, they were confident they could build a custom fiberglass enclosure in that space to fit either an 8" or a 10" sub that doesn't require much mounting depth or a large box. They told me to try and stay around .5 cu ft when choosing the sub. I'm hoping they'll be able to cram the Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1d in there. I'll post pics and let everyone know how it all came out in a couple weeks when I get it done.

goody goody dawg. yes, please do show some pictures. i know something or someone could do such. i went to our local car audio place, they were askin 550 dollars just for a JL sub and box not including labor and other parts. just too pricey. i was thinkin of doin it myself, just needed this forum to show me how

Yep, that's about what they quoted me for the Stealthbox too. They estimated $300 for the custom fiberglass enclosure not including the sub, so it's still pricey, but it's worth it to me to not lose the cargo space.

Just wanted to drop my 2 cents in....
Consider that a "normally"-enclosed subwoofer in a standard subwoofer box is removable. I have a pretty large box (1.5' X 1.5' X 4' maybe?) in my hatch area. Whenever I move something big, I just disconnect it and take it out. No big deal.
Just keep it in mind when you are considering spending so much on a custom subwoofer enclosure (which, by the way, would be pretty darn cool!).
Also, check my post in the Audio discussion regarding my custom amp installation.

Agreed; in that sense a big speaker box is "mobile," but a good number of times I'll have to haul a ton of boxes or such around from building to building at work, and it's not always convenient to unplug and stash a 50 or 60 pound Box of Boom. I had a pair of 15s in my old Blazer that I installed with that intention and found that after the first couple of times it became too much of a hassle (read: I became too lazy) to schlep the box in and out of my truck. :violin:
So, this time I'm going the custom route so that I've always got some sound with me when I go places; plus, as you said, it's definitely cooler :cheers:

oh yes its gonna be cool, but i dunno about the space in that cubby hole is enough to make the bass sound good. i saw in the internet that they customized the wall of the rear hatch door and placed the subs there through a molded fiberglass. i cant find the pic no more so i hope you know what i mean.
