can GX470 windshield be installed in a 4Runner?

Hello all. Proud new T4R owner here. I'm loving it, except for one thing: wind noise. I get a LOT of wind noise when driving 50+, and of course even more into a headwind.

Now, from what I've read on this forum, the GX470 windshield is thicker than the 4Runner's, supposedly to make it "Lexus quiet". Can anyone confirm this? And if so, would it be possible to install a GX470 windshield on a 4Runner?

I dunno. Maybe my 4Runner has a thinner windshield than most, but I swear that's where the wind noise is coming from (and the channeling around it). Any windshield experts out there? Thanks...

Nope the body style is different and the roof line is higher on the GX

If it is the lamination that makes the glass quieter, then there is an economical solution to your quest for Lexus-like quite in the 4Runner, or any other car for that matter. Ace is a company that makes security lamination films. When added to car windows the lamination exceeds anything I have seen on windshields. I watched a guy beat the hell out of a laminated car side window with a baseball bat. It took over 40 full power swings to even make a small crack in the glass. (Fox TV 4 here in Dallas, and again at the Dallas Home Show.) What they told me was the longer the lamination is on the car glass, and in the sun, the stronger it becomes. There are companies all over the US that install the lamination film.

Scraping ice? No I would not want to chance it scratching.

Windshields are laminated anyway, at least here in the US. I think that what makes the Ace lamination so strong is that it is on the outside of the glass. Windshield lamination is an internal layer.

I asked them if the laminate can be applied to the windshield of the 4runner, for chipping and noise reduction, here is what they said:



ACE:
Our laminate is a retro-fit product and can not be applied to the front
windshield. It causes distortion because of the curvature of the
windshield.

I'm sorry we can not help in this instance.

You are right, but then a windshield is easy to replace. I have the 3M lamination on the front of my 4Runner to prevent rock damage. Works like a champ.
