Can I quiet this fan down?

I have heard many 4runners whining down the road and the one I purchased does the same thing. Is the clutch fan sticking or is this normal for a functioning clutch fan in these trucks. I've had them on other vehicles and during acceleration normally they disengaged to relieve the strain from the motor, but this one seems to do it worse under acceleration. I've also heard that perfectly symmetrical fans are louder too and I've noticed this fan is symmetrical. I was told that cutting off 2 blades straight across from each other would help but that sounds a bit sketchy to me. Anyways, anything you guys done about this?

I have a 93 3.0 5spd and I don't notice my fan making hardly any noise and its stock. Sorry I can't help more but I would guess it may need a new fan clutch.

Could be that P.O. modified it so it stays engaged at all times?
My 86 doesn't make that sound, either. However, because I spent so much on engine rebuild and all-new cooling system (coolant route), I just ordered replacement clutch anyway.

I have a 90 and it never made a sound just put in a electric one mine only took like and hour tops to do the whole thing and helps a lot

You could install an electric fan if this one is too noisy for you. Might see a MPG bump from it too.

Yea gas mileage would be nice since I drive it 100 miles daily. Today I turned the fan by hand and it takes some pressure to turn it, I recall other clutch fans I have had turning effortlessly. Are they adjustable?

You might consider replacing the fan bracket which has a bearing in it. It would also help to replace the fan clutch with an Asian unit. Did this on our 1990, and it is very quiet.

Just change the fan clutch. Not expensive and easy to install.

Ya that's definitely where the noise is coming from. Today I replaced all the belts and while I had them off I fired it up and the noise was gone. I'm going to put a new clutch on it this weekend and hopefully that'll clear it up and take some strain off the motor. Thanks guys.
