The guy who fried his ECM, was this because he mixed up the wiring hookup?

We believe it was some sort of dead short in the car he was jumping. The cables were hooked up correctly. Side Note: If you looked at the condition of this car and the mess under the hood, you would - as he should have - walked away before even attempting anything. Live and learn.

These battery jump starters are the way to go! Almost all of them now are pretty much idiot proof. They have built in software that will warn you if they are hooked up wrong and will shut off so you won’t damage your car or the battery jump starter.

I know one local tow-truck company carries the Noco Boost X shown above and it has received good reviews. I have the Audew 2000mAh Car Battery Jumpstarter. It has worked very well for me. A jump only uses 6% of the battery so you can do multiple jumps and it’s a great back up charger for iPhones and iPads. Also since the 4Runner has a 120v outlet you can charge it as you drive. The only issue I have is that you always have to push the boost button to give you enough power to start and the button itself is small and black which makes it hard to see. The first time I used it I spent 5 min looking for it. I painted it red to make it easier to see.

Another nice thing about these is is you don’t have to wait for anyone to help and they are much more compact than than jumper cables. I think these should be a must have for any car.
