Can tires be causing vibration on 04?

I have the crappy Dunlops on my 04 and I have a vibration that I can't seem to get rid of. The wheels have been balanced on a Hunter machine with the adapter plate. Can the tires themselves be causing the vibtration? The vibration starts at 60-65 mph.

I don't think that is cause. It sounds like the drone is coming from the engine or somewhere under the hood. I do not know for sure though!

If the wheels have been balanced then the problem can be elsewhere.

Have you checked your driveshaft? I know it's uncommon but sometimes you can have a small dent on the driveshaft that makes the vibrations.

Also look into getting it rebalanced elsewhere as they might not be balancing them correctly.

I tried to read Thai's posts, but couldn't open the links. Not to get too simplistic, but a friend had a similar problem with a brand new 2001 SR5 way back when. Same kind of deal, at 65 to 70 mph there was a tremendous vibration. In this case, the steering wheel also was a little bit off center when the truck was going straight. After trashing a tire, an alignment and a new tire made the difference. I honestly always figured it was the alignment, but maybe it was both fixes-- the tire and the alignment. In this case the steering wheel was also centered in the end.

i can tell you that just last friday i replaced my 4 month old dunlops(because of awful wet traction) with michelin cross terrains. i was very pleased to notice the tire vibration i had (with dunlops which i had already had re-balanced once at the dealership) was now gone! BTW, the vibration i had with the dunlops was also at about 65 mph. Hope this helps.

Edit: I ended up returning the michelins and opted for the revos. The revos were out of stock, so i temporarily have the non revo duelers and the vibration is back.

Brand new 2004 Sport Edition shakes

I just picked up a 2004 Sport Edition. I noticed the steering wheel shaking between 60-65mph the first day (03/20/04). I now have 200 miles on it and already called the dealer for an appointment to check it out. I'll post the results.

I agree on the alignment

OK, so I have the SR5 with the 17 inch wheels. Mine were not balanced or aligned properly. We couldn't go over 65 or pass a big-rig without being tossed all over the freeway.

That was fixed two months after I owned mine. I'm at 22k and it will still go a straight line.



The rest of the truck still sucks.

I was real excited to pick up my new 2004 Sport V6 last Tuesday. Then after driving it I noticed the steering wheel would shimmy back and forth on occasion at 60-65MPH. After reading some threads about this problem I visited my Toyota dealer today and asked if they had the Hawecka flange plate adapter. The service advosor wasn't sure what I was referring to. I suggested she ask the tecnicians who would be servicing my car. They were well aware of the flange plate adapter and proper balancing procedures. An hour later I was back on the road with no shimmy at all. Check this thread and make sure your tires are installed and balanced using this method only.
