Can we please bring politics back?

With one rule, complain about a thread to moderators and get permanently banned. Pretty sure that was the mods only gripe, dealing with PM’s from snowflakes.

If you don’t like something, no one is forcing you to read it.

There is seriously so much to discuss...or есть так много, чтобы обсудить for the Real Americans here.

I do enjoy some of the political banter, but I completely understand why it's banned. Each thread pretty much follow the same theme. Introduce topic. A somewhat reasonable debate for a page or so and then just a handful of people calling each other names for the rest of it.

Well the good thing about the BAN is this time there is a banner and it is 100% clear with no exceptions.

Politics pisses people off and so much of the banter is just poisonous to the environment here.

Plus as I understand it there was a huge amount (maybe from just a few people) of unwarranted complaints to the mods in these political threads because fragile weak minded individuals [whoever they are] felt that a good solution to dealing with an :censored: was to file a complaint "I'm offended" instead of just closing the thread and moving on.

I totally support someone's right to complain if a post is breaking the rules. Lets use the example or personal attacks or being a racist. But people complain these days for just about anything. TRIGGERED .... welcome to 2018. The internet isn't a safe space. If you don't like something then just move on.

Please don't instigate, like commenting on old threads. It is rude at this point since the ban is in place. You'll probably be sanctioned and it just creates more work for the mods who have to then lock those old threads as they come up.

I wouldn't expect politics to come back. Politics has been banned at least 2 times now and bringing it back the 2nd time didn't work out apparently. I wouldn't expect another chance anytime soon.

Pick a side and shout down the opposition!! That'll teach 'em AND solve all our problems once they finally realize how wrong they are and come around to MY way of thinking!

Yeah, very few can objectively discuss anything political these days. Perhaps we never could... too many incapable of or unwilling to consider anything that doesn't align perfectly with their own thoughts/beliefs/political team.

I swear, one side could come up with legislation that would eradicate all cancer and the other would be against it for no other reason than to try and deny the opposition a "victory". It's sad, and seems to permeate this country to the core.

But I digress... I agree with not having a political section. I've seen those petty arguments fester and destroy good forums.

While politics has always been an easy source for quick debate, today's medium makes it worse. It's far easier to have a civilized debate face to face. You can counterpoint and dissolve any miscommunications quickly and easily. Online when people read something, there is enough time for them to draw their own conclusions on it and stew before responding. Thus their mind has already been made up even if the original point was misinterpreted. Much harder to go back and clarify when that has happened.

I’d rather hear what you all think about topic x, even if I do vehemently disagree, than have CNN or Fox News tell me what to think about it. I guess I don’t see how it hurts a forum. It’s buried under Off-Topic. Not that many people travel here and if you know you’re easily offended you don’t have to click into it. How about a political section on its own that people know to steer clear of.

Plus let’s be honest internet shouting matches are kind of fun, pointless, but fun.

On another forum I belong to they have a word count limit for political topics, so one needs to be concise and not endlessly banter about the opposition.

Crying to the moderators is pretty weak. I wonder if our forefathers would tell everyone to just grow a backbone. Considering they had been on the other side, with no access to free speech at times, they would remind us to make sure our words counted.

I agree with BrianSD_42, it doesn't need to come back.

My father (RIP) always said, do NOT discuss "politics or religion" at the dinner table!!! These two topics are surely to cause heated debate and accomplish nothing except give you heartburn!!

I just experienced it in one forum... they had an "anything goes" section, and soon religious and political lines were drawn. What started out as genial banter became bitter, aggressive attacks toward one another. The personal conflicts started to bleed out into other forums on the site. Finally, the mods got tired of it and just shut the "anything goes" section down and refuse to this day to even allow an off-topic section.

It was kinda fun for a while, until it wasn't. Some started digging up online dirt on each other and their families, posting it, and calling each other out for fist fights. Honestly, it got pretty creepy at the end.

There’s little point in discussing politics because so few people are open-minded. They say they want “discussion” but that translates into just expressing their views. Anyone with the same perspective already agrees and anything written seldom changes the minds of those holding a different view. It all adds up to a huge waste of time.

The true shame is how both sides continue to gravitate toward their respective extremes. Nothing gets accomplished out at the ends of the spectrum; it takes compromise, and that has become a four-letter word.

seems pretty stupid to ban politics in the off topic section, sure it never went anywhere productive but I had fun.

I also had about 100 visits a day, with this safe space our mods have created I come maybe once a week. ad revenue no like safe space

I think the folks it sucks most for are those of us (on all sides) who actively refrained from personal attacks, trolling, baiting, flame wars etc and posted overall reasonable comments, links articles opinions etc. Unfortunately it is always a few bad apples that ruin it for any group.

The reason I like getting alternative points from folks on the forum is that it is 100% user generated. Unlike Facebook or Google news, Twitter etc which all use algorithms to show you 1st what you most likely to click on. That is a terrible design and reinforces everyone's already decided opinions.

Looking back I do wish folks would have shared more actual article links, podcasts, books, etc. Stuff that isn't just cable news junk or memes from either side. There is a lot of good content out there and I care less about a point getting proved, which is impossible on a thread btw, than I do about getting recommendations.

Does Jordan Peterson count as politics? He's Canadian. I recommend you all check him out on Youtube or JRE podcast. I don't think he counts as politics since he isn't a republican or democrat or conservative or liberal. He is just a guy who happens to be a Canadian professor of Psychology.

IMHO, this is a Toyota forum, not, a political forum. There better places to talk politics.

I 2nd no politics on the forum, but I totally respect all the above members and enjoy the posts, links and perspectives y’all have shared in past posts/threads I’ve read. Meet ups really help connect our members.

where the F..have I been. I didn't know that political discussions were put to a stop.

At least, I thought the threads did a okay job of policing themselves. You got both sides of the discussion, and then you just gotta out troll the trolls on both sides of the aisle. No big deal if you are a grown up.

safe spaces in the off topic forum????

It's a shame, really. Folks complain too much in general.

Right here, right now we have it better, easier and down right more luxurious than any other generation or group of people in the known history of our civilization/existence/planet.

And, yet, people cannot just read shit on the internet and move on without throwing a conniption fit and telling mom or taking their ball and going home. They have little to no control over their emotions. No emotional intelligence.

They have to get all safe spacey, protect me from other peoples ideas and ruin open discussion for those of us that can simply debate the merits of our positions and opinions in order to engage and challenge others and ourselves to further our understanding of each other and our existence as a whole.

That being said, this site is privately owned and controlled and I respect the right of the owners to do as they wish with this platform. I'd never force anyone to do anything they didn't want to.

I find that I just don't come here much or post much anymore. Most people on this forum do write-ups that are straightforward for technical/mechanical things with my 4Runnner, which was what brought me here in the first place and why I still frequent. I rarely have to ask a question, and there is no need for fluff posts.

It's fun to debate online. The medium is abused and sometimes terrible, but it is also a great and unique form of communication in many ways at times, amongst those that don't go full retard.

In my opinion this forum has a wonderful cross section of people with very eclectic views and opinions. It isn't an echo chamber. It isn't full of vitriol and hate, although those elements exist, as they do everywhere else.

I've experienced passionate articulations and compassionate counter thoughts from many members leading to some good insights. In my view, that's worth holding onto despite the bickering and childish behavior.

I am one who prefers open discussion and when folks break the rules, ban their IP for life. Ban hammer comes down quick and is enforced ruthlessly; people tend to chill out or are gone pretty quick.

In the end it is the will of the owners of this site and my reaction to the current ban on politics has been to spend more of my limited internet time elsewhere.

We shut down mediums and topics of discussion and we shut down our own brains and ourselves.

Sure, you can "Go elsewhere, talk politics there". You can also not click a link, or just click off of it and go elsewhere to ignore anything politico.
