Can we used a Motorcycle carrier rack on our 4runners?

I was thinking of getting one of these for my 2003 R1 but i'm not sure if this would be too much strain on the tow hitch considering the bumps in the road and other driving conditions. I've seen people use these for dirt bikes and i was wondering if it would work for heavier sport bikes too.

Yes, there's a few folks that do it. Generally they use Airlift or Firestone airbags in the rear coil springs. On a bike 'busa heavy the V8 style hitch is preferred as it has an extra brace and higher tongue weight rating. An R1 is probably fine either way.

I've read

I've been checking them out as I just sold my Tacoma and now it's either a trailer or a carrier.
I've been told that due to the distance BACK from the truck that you should cut the tongue rating in 1/2. So the v8's 700lb tongue rating should really only be used up to 350lbs.
That will be fine for my old XR350, but not for a big bike. Other makers may have another design that is more braced/hd for larger bikes.
I've also read a few disaster stories of dumping bikes in transit.
Hard to tell though, as there's so many stupid people in the world.

Things get pretty sketchy back there with even a 250 pound bike. You'd think you were hauling something much larger. My dirt bike is ok at 200 pounds, but I wouldn't even consider my Triumph 955 at 450 lbs regardless of the rack's weight rating. BTW, all of that was on my 4x4 towing equipped SUBURBAN.

The physics of the tongue length makes it a challenge to do anything really heavy.

it is a lot of tongue weight. but the lever is no longer than that of a trailer tongue.. I agree with CJ and suggest some air bags for the rear suspension... I have no doubt the V8 hitch will carry it, though

Look again. The tongue LENGTH may be the same, but on a trailer the weight is on the connection at the ball. (FRONT of the tongue)
With the bike hauler the weight is at the BACK of the tongue, where the bike is.
Big difference.

i see.. the longer trailer tongue actually reduces the tongue weight on the ball due to its distance from the trailer axle.

without anything behind the bike, there is nothing to counteract the fores.. that bike hauler better be made of some thick steel

Yes you can. 300lb KTM LC4e with a Versa Hauler. I have OME 3 inch heavy duty springs - no sag with the bike but sits ass high unloaded. Look at the rear fender gap. Nice.

I hauls so easy you forget it's back there. I run tow lights as well. I have run this set up since I got the rig - 5 years this fall.

The blue strap you see going across the bike connects from the tow loop through the bike to the other frame rail. It stop any side to side play.

I ride the KTM where ever I want - it's like a 640cc tractor! Plenty of grunt to haul my fat ass around. I take to Ocala a few time a year to ride with the Sand Fleas (advrider.com). The pix was taken at Ocean Pond near Lake City on one of our outings.
I hit the local spots as well like Red Hill behind Embry Riddle or off Williamson behind ATC or across from the car dealers off LPGA. I ride with Daytona Dirt Riders as well.
My personal fave is to haul it up to the mtn. of western VA where my parnets used to live. I'll take my 1st trip to Tellico in 2 weeks for some off road fun. I like hill climbs and more techanical type stuff.

All things considered I don't think anyone would/could argue with my loading technique/philosophy. I am not exceeding any published limits.
