All I have is a wild guess... Sounds like maybe vapor lock or some kind of hot air intake issue. Did the check engine light come on?

Things you might verify if you know what to look for-

1. Are all the original heat shields intact?

2. Has the engine air intake ducting been modified or damaged?

3. Are the fuel hoses missing insulation or routed near hot parts of the engine?

4. Does the engine seem to run hot, like the cooling system is not doing its job?

5. When was the last time the vehicle had a general tune-up?

That's really all I can think of, probably not much help...

You may want to post your question over at the "Yotatech" forum. There are probably many more members there who have experience with earlier generation 4Runners.

1. Are all the original heat shields intact? yes

2.Has the engine air intake ducting been modified or damaged? look good

3. Are the fuel hoses missing insulation or routed near hot parts of the engine? like new

4. Does the engine seem to run hot, like the cooling system is not doing its job? normal

5. When was the last time the vehicle had a general tune-up?

ok Baba Booey i'll go

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THAT IS!!!

I had the same problem! 99% sure its the starter contacts. Its a $2 part at your local autoparts store. Takes about 1hr to fix it yourself. Look into it.....its very common.

BTW.....I dont know crap about cars....but looked it up online and found a site (that i cant remember) that lays it out step by step how to fix it.....its really really easy.

Good luck

Keith

can you tell me how can the starter contacts can cause backfire ,lack of power ,smoke ???

I think about fuel/air mixture problem but not about starter problem???

I have an 88-4Runner V6; same as yours, except it has 5spd. Sometimes it "spits" or "coughs" after startup under acceleration. I just put it in a lower gear and after 30 seconds or so at higher rpm it straightens itself out. Your problem certainly sounds like fuel to me, especially since you did that tune up. I did notice that you didn't list the distributor cap or the rotor as being changed along with the spark plug wires. If not, I would do that; it's not expensive and is easy to do. I suggest that you pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank when you're down to about 5 gal (~20 liters) or so. Also, open the hood at night, especially when it's damp out, to see if you're getting any high voltage arcing anywhere. Hope you solve it, good luck.

Could be the head gasket allowing water into the cylinder as the engine cools. Do you get lots of white smoke from the exhaust when you start it? If so, have the cooling system pressure checked.
