Can you ID Sport model by VIN ?

ok, this is kinda interesting

I am 2nd owners of an '08 SR5

Can anyone tell me if the Sport model designation is coded in the VIN ?

(How do you read the VIN ?)

Anyway, here's the interesting part ....

I registered my vehicle on the Corporate Toyota site, in the Toyota/owners section

I typed in my VIN as part of the registration, and I could pull up all the Toyota service records

(In my case, this vehicle was a lease turn in...)

I'm reading thru the records, which go back to the NEW CAR PRE-DELIVERY INSPECTION in Jan '08

and on 02/08 (the first entry which shows the vehicle at 11 miles on the odometer) shows: SWAP OUT HOODS CUST DID NOT WANT HOOD SCOOP


Is this a Sport model, or could you factory order a "regular" SR5 with a hood scoop ?

As far as I could tell, SR5 and Sport are fairly indistinguishable by VIN, my Sport Edition is registered w/ insurance as a "SR5/Sport Toyota 4Runner"; all the carfaxes i ran had a similar paired designation for a few that I looked at. Mine has the hood scoop and big brakes though, so I'm pretty certain it's actually a Sport. Does yours have the bigger front brakes?

These are the ways to tell the difference: The SR5 had a black side mirrors, chrome grill and 16" - 5 spoke rims. The Sport had a Smoked Chrome grill, smoked headlamp bezels and XREAS - Hydraulic lines connected to each shock.

I work at a GM dealership, and I know that I can type in a GM VIN# and get all of the RPO codes which are all of the options and equipment that is on that vehicle. If you go to a Toyota dealership they should be able to print out the same thing, just for a Toyota....

No, not all SR5's had 16" wheels. Some have 17" wheels. My SR5 came with OEM 17" wheels.

Mine also - they were part of the B package in Canada which added 3rd row seats, auto light control and tilt/telecopic steering wheel (that last option without sunroof was the only way I could fit in the 4th gen - I liked it that much)

By the VIN alone, no. There isn't a unique character in the VIN to distinguish the Sport from the SR5.

I asked my buddy that question this morning. He's a Service guy at a local large Toyota Dealership and he concurs with the notion that there's no way to distinguish a Sport Edition from the SR5 or a Limited.

He DID tell me that a couple of guys have come in and bought new 2011 Limited 4Runners, but then ordered the Trail Edition hood and wheels, had them painted at the dealer shop and didnt want the new ride even out of the dealership garage until it was all assembled and de-badged!

The SR5 and Sport Edition can't be distinguished from each other. The Limited has a different 7th digit in the VIN. SR5/Sport Edition has a 4. The Limited has a 7.
