Can you paint chrome?

Well that much I was figuring on. But if properly sanded and primered, can it be done to look good and last?

I'm about to do the same....well I'm buying new black bumpers for front and back. I don't know how well I will like it though. But I'm repainting my fender and hood anyways so if I don't like the black look I'll just paint the bumpers the same color as it already is.
Anybody have same color truck as mine with black bumpers? Would like a picture to get an idea.

Can I ask how much black bumpers are running you and do you know how hard try are to install? That might be the smarter way to go depending on price and work involved.

I looked at that, but I have an SR5 with no cladding and the painted bumpers are only for the cars with the trim levels that came with cladding, as far as I could tell. This means the rear sides would be too short and the front end of the rear side pieces would look funny without the cladding to butt up against. (I spent a fair amount of time in parking lots researching painted 3G bumpers.) Am I wrong about this? It appears you have the same trim style I do, except I have the 'fat lip' in front.

Ive been looking at all sorts of gen 3s also lately and can't figure out whY is what. I have a 97 with the black plastic type fender flares and mud guards all around and chrome bumpers. Today I saw a truck I sweR was the same as mine, but bumpers looked black. That's what I'd like mine to look like, like a flat black to match my fender flares. I'd like to black out all chrome aside from the badges, they look fresher to me that way.

Mine didn't come with with the limited big flares just running boards and small ince rubber/chrome flare trim and I took those off. But I'm ordering mine from Certifit.com I believe is the site. That's where I got my new fender and hood. They have both black and chrome bumpers for like $60. Getting them with wholesale carlot discount because my uncle owns a carlot and cousin has professional body shop there as well.
Anyways I'm putting a newer engine in mine right now since I blew two rods, got an engine for $800 with 108k on it. After that gonna put new bumpers and fender and new lights all around. Then also the LED interior mod.
I'm on iPhone right now or I'd upload fender pics and how they layout. I'll post pics after we get the engine in this week and start on the bumpers and lights.

Please do. I'd like to see if the black ones will be shorter on the rear pieces than your original chrome. I will be very curious to see how they look because I'd like to do this myself.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but my stock bumpers came painted dark grey from the factory. I also cut my flares to look better since I took the running boards off. You can see how the mud flaps continue the fender flares onto the rear bumper in the first pic. In the 2nd pic the mud flaps are off (I took em off so I wouldn't rub my tires on them), but you can see how the cut flares look. I'm not even sure this is what you guys are talking about..

Sorry still have no computer and as cool as this iPhone sounds I still can't add pictures to forums. But I don't have any trim and didn't cut anything out, just un screwed a small inch and a half chrome trim and now it's straight fender if you can see in picure.
Where'd you get the bumper? I can't say for sure if the certifit bumpers I'm about to order are smokey or straight black but either way I'll make them black. Gotta see for myself but thank you for the picture it gives me a good heads up and so far I'm liking it!

I guess thats what Ive seen on others too and thats what I prefer. But I dont get it, how come we both have same model and year, but I have chrome and you have the dark grey that matches the flares?
I just painted my chrome grill surround a week ago here at it turned out great. Just prep it, prep it, prep it and you should be good. I used 200 grit to sand it down, clean it with water with just a drop of dish soap. Then lay down a good primer, personally I used some industrial Rustoleum. After all that just paint it up! :hungry:
