Can you replace factory sub?

Okay, another of my million questions.
I'm getting the feeling that you can't use the stock JBL sub with an aftermarket amp.
My question is, has anyone put in an after market sub in the stock sub location, using the existing enclosure. I'm assuming it's an 8 inch sub, but I can't find much info about it. Anyone do this?

Things to keep in mind :

You can not replace the stock sub without replacing the stock amp ...

The stock sub location is 8 inches.... but it is not very deep. Some of the good 8 inch subs out there are too deep to fit in the stock location. Some modifications would be necessary.

I bought a 8" Cerwin Vega HED-D802 sub to go into the stock location. I got it on clearance on Ubid for $49, regular price is $100. It has a mounting depth of 4" (I think the OEM JBL is 3-15/16") and should fit into the stock location without issues. Cerwin Vega has published two different depths, one with a thick cosmetic rubber cap over the magnet and one without it. It should fit without it. I have not installed it yet as I do not have my 4runner yet. I figured I can use a spacer ring if I need too.

I searched long and hard for a good performing sub that would fit. I ran the parameters of this sub as well as many others in many sub box software programs and the performance matched that of my old 10" Infinity DVC sub. I feel pretty good about the accuracy of the software programs because their results matched manufacturers published graphs for subs that had them.

I will be using an Blaupunkt PA2150 (2x150W) amp to power it. This is not the most powerful amp, but it is small (8"x9") and so efficient it does not have a heatsink. Hopefully it will fit under the passenger seat, but not sure as the passenger seat on the 2006 is now powered. I wanted a little more bass than the factory JBL without having a box sitting in the cargo area.

I did some searching and found that the mounting depth is 4" and I found a JL audio 8" sub (8w0) with a mounting depth of 4.06". Before I go and start ripping apart my 4runner, do you think that extra .06 of an inch will matter? Think it will fit?

I am probably not the best person to answer this as I have not installed my yet. Someone who has done a sub replacement could give a lot more input.

However I am predicting some possible minor fit issues when I do mine. The sub may hit the back of the box. If so, I will make a spacer ring to fit between the box an basket of the sub. I will probably use 1/4" thick wood. Or a thick dense foam may be sufficient to prevent contact between the box and magnet. The fit will be tight so air circulation into the vent on the magnet for the sub's voicecoil will be minimal. But I am not worried about this as I will not be powering with high wattage. Last the box has a ring that surrounds the factory JBL sub. Might have to get the dremel out and trim/cut this.

Where is the subwoofer

I've got an '06 4Runner SR5 with the standard HU w/CD player. I've probably don't have the sub, but where is the sub located on the other 4Runners? I figure they've got to have al least the opening available for adding one in, right?

The sub and amp are located in the plastic box in the cargo area on the passenger side. I think that vehicles without the sub and amp will have extra cargo room in this area as opposed to the closed-in plastic cover. You can order the plastic cover that has the mounts for the sub from partznet if I am not mistaken.

Possible replacement

If there's room for a .75 spacer between the OEM enclosure and the rear of the trim panel and the OEM enclosure is 4" deep, this is a possible drop in replacement:

With dual 2 ohm voice coils, it should work well off of the factory JBL amp since others on here have reported the OEM JBLs are 2 ohm drivers. There's also a dual 4 ohm version of this sub if the OEM sub is dual 4 ohm.

Don't know how well Image Dynamics drivers actually match their published parameters, but if they do, the ID8D2 V3 models pretty well in the OEM .6 ft^3 sealed enclosure with the 90 watts available from the JBL amp. Without cabin gain, WinISD says 88db@20hz, 94@30hz. Conservative articles I've seen suggest +20db of cabin gain at 20hz, so you're looking at 108db or more peaks. It's not competition level, but it should be a satisfying drop in replacement for only $105 delivered.
