Cant get tailgate off to replace!

Ok my rear tailgate door has a bad latch that will not open. I have a new complete gate ready to go on. anyone have any idea how to get to the latch to unscrew it from it's base??

So is your hatch stuck closed? It would be silly to replace the whole hatch for a bad latch, so there must be more to the story...
And if the latch is bad, and you're replacing the gate, why would you need to "unscrew" the latch?

Ok I got it open by taking the center black panel off and yanking on the cable. The door is dented and damaged so that's why I'm replacing it. Plus the new one has a black spoiler that's looks pretty cool too. NOW my problem is trying to get to the plug that is supposed to exist to match up to the new door for the electrical. So far I see no plug just an endless wiring harness that disappears under the roof....???

Ok I'll answer my own questions. The connector set is up under the roof just beyond the door opening. NOW my problem is the damn pin-out is different!! there are two plugs on the harness, on the original 96 the plugs are the same size. On the new door one plug is half the size and pin-out!! WTF!!?? now only the lights and door lock work. The wiper, defrost and window are not getting power. Does anyone know the pin-out for these plugs!??

Did you ever figure this out? I also have a rear door from a 99 that I was wanting to swap on to a 96, but noticed the difference with the plugs and held off til I could find some info.

You will need to swap the harness out of your old hatch into your new hatch. The plugs changed at some point in time, I think it might have been 99.

Yeah good call, the new door is a 99. Looks so much better with the Spoiler though. Door lock and plate lights work with one of the two plugs for now. I imagine it can't be that bad of a swap? ..a few solder points?

Usually what people do is pull the harness out of the hatch that came on their truck, pull the harness out of the new hatch, and then run the original harness through your new hatch so your plugs line up. Not sure about soldering or if that would even work. Never heard of that being done.

You also need to keep all of the leaves & dirt out door jam's, lift gate, hood & any area that collects dirt, salt & moisture. That's what causes rust.

Rear hatch wiring is completely different on '96-'98 vs. '99-'02 (later years added the multiplex communication system, alarm antenna, etc.). You'll need to use what matches the rest of your truck. You will probably also need to swap in some of your original internal parts...

All the plugs should be the same, but you will need to swap your window control relay box.

When I swapped my hatch, I got only the shell, and the wiring had been cut at the jamb.
So I used all my old guts, as well as all the old wire harness. Not too big of a project, but does take some time.
Not sure what you're thinking needs soldered- the wiring is a direct swap.
That all being said, I would get the wiring diagrams for both, and re-pin the connectors. Even if it has more functions(alarm antenna etc), it also has the same basic functions. You should be able to re-pin fairly easily.
Wiring diagrams can be gotten from techinfo.toyota.com

No. Not for the years he is doing.

You cannot just repin to make '99 guts work with '96 truck or vice versa. The multiplex communication bus system on '99+ is just too different from the pre-'99 system.
