Can't live without MP3 and NAV any longer ...

I can't live without having MP3 cd capabilites much longer ... and I would really like to get a nice NAV unit at the same time. My problem is that I have the JBL 10 speaker / 6 disk system in my '05 ... which I assume means I am going to have to replace more than just my head unit to get everything going.

So --- my question is --- Has anyone had a shop install a new headunit and get all of the 10 speakers working afterwards? What kinda cash are we talking about for something like this?

You might want to hold on and see if the new NAV unit for the 2006 4Runner will work in the older models since it will have Bluetooth, MP3 & WMA capability.

That is what I was originally doing .... but it looks like the ones from oemvalue.com (the Solara one that fits the 4Runner) doesn't have the MP3 capability for some reason. Either that, or they are incorrectly reporting that it doesn't. I have asked the question on their forums and through e-mail over there, and no one has responded to me. The part that says it doesn't have MP3 or DVD video capabilities looks like it is just a copy and paste of the description of the 05 units.


I called the parts department at my local dealership and they said that Toyota is working on an factory kit that can be purchased for the Runners.... but one isn't available yet.

just get the oem nav and a ipod adapter. i have a pioneer head unit and nav and once I hooked up my pioneer ipod adapter with headunit controls. I havent used a wav or mp3 cd since.

Ok, to answer your question... There hasn't been any way to amp intergrate all 10 speakers in yet. To make everything work again, you are going to need a 5 channel amp along with a small amp to get the sub working again.


You are looking at about 1000 dollars worth of labor and parts to get the system working how you want it to.

What?? leave the ipod? nah man...you're supposed to be plugged into that thing. as soon as you shut the 4runner down, you plug in the headphone and pop it outta the interface and keep the tunez goin'!

now to get an ipod interface for my nav...I've been stalling waiting to see if some other brave soul will get one with all the track info working with the oem navs.

honestly, though. your best bet is an oem nav. If you can stick it out for another several months, I bet at some point that oemvalue will start getting in the '06 navs which, like snap mentioned, will have both bluetooth and wma/mp3 features. That's what I'd do if I hadn't purchased my nav unit a year and a half ago...not complaining, tho...I love my nav.

ah, gotcha...my bad. I hadn't looked at the website. maybe it's that some of the '06 vehicles have bt and mp3 and some don't. I think he gets them from vehicles that have had new installs done. I guess there are more solara and camrys that have new installs done...dunno the real reason.

Here's a stupid question...in these OEM navigation systems...where does one put in a CD? There's no slot, and it doesn't look like it flips down...is a changer required? If that's the case, wouldn't it be better (and cheaper) to get an aftermarket navigation system?

I'm new to in-vehicle navigation...I've been using a handheld GPS for years, but the car stuff is still new to me.

The '06 Camry's don't have BT or MP3 capabilities, only SAT. I guess since this is the last year for this design, they're saving some features for the'07 redesign.

The screen flips down to reveal two slots, one for CD and the other for the DVD map disc.

I looked into purchasing the Camry Nav unit for my stock 4Runner "UNTIL" I read that none of Toyota's units will allow DVD video playback. Why on earth would someone want to waste over $1500 on a factory Nav when you could add about $200-$500 more for an aftermarket unit that does it all.

Yeah --- the absolute lack of DVD video is just frustrating .....

However --- at this point I would settle for a Toyota unit if it would simply just support bluetooth and MP3....

I have the 2006 Solara Nav system which I got from OEMValue. No luck on the mp3 or the bluetooth (at least none that I can see or can get to work). It does have built in support for XM radio, but I'm personally waiting for CoastaleTech.com's Ipod solution if it ever comes out....hopefully soon, I'm getting tired of looking at the 'comming soon' caption on their website.
