i finally got things rolling on my 4runner project and im hitting a wall with this issue hoping you guys can help. i have an 85 4runner dlx using as a daily driver im having an issue with the trans where it goes into a limp mode 3rd gear and wont respond to the accelerator the O/D light blinks. Per fsm i tried retrieving the codes jumping TE1 and E1 terminals except this is where it gets hairy nothing happens i get my CEL codes, but cant get the o/d light codes as a numerical code to at least give me a starting point, cel codes are plentiful but i believe these two issues are related ive tried several different tps units readjusted 10x no improvement adjusted idle checked tstat by boiling, no other lights are on the truck shifts normally until this limp mode kicks in i can upshift manually and that helps get up to cruising speeds but wont cruise at above 60 to 65, ive done a ton of research and cant come up with nothing is there any way to get the a340 into diagnostic mode and pull codes???, in my despair ive even called a few trans shops locally they said "we have to run diagnostics" not getting the fact that a paperclip is the scan tool. everything i know about 22re and early toys i learned from you guys on here so im really hoping i can get some guidance, Suggestions , comments are welcome and if anyone has ANY INPUT AT ALL ILL TAKE IT ,my only other option is to change every sensor and solenoid in the trans and hope for the best. Thanks in advance:redbrick::redbrick::ak472::ak472:

To get transmission codes, make sure you have the OD button in the On position, then jump the diag port. If there are codes, the OD will blink them at you. If it's blinking when you're driving but won't spit out codes, I suspect you've got the OD switched off.

Try calling around to dealer service departments or Toyota specialists. There is a scan tool they can plug into the diag port that will give better info than the paperclip, but IME it's about 50/50 whether a dealer will have it, and no chance that your average trans shop will.

What are the engine codes?

transmission diagnostics

hey thanks for the quick reply , i did confirm the O/D is on when im trying to pull the codes as far as engine codes last few times i attempted to jumper for trans codes i havent really been paying attention only because this drivability issue is my priority i have called a few dealers and I dont feel any sense of confidence from them as soon as i tell them its a 85 4runner i get the awkward silence. i guess ill start by doing a trans flush with an additive and do all 3 solenoids to start. im going to retrieve the cel codes too ill get back to you on those:scared:

so the CEL code is 11 defective TPS its brand new so im not sure why the code ,but man this thing is kicking my ass!!!

So doublecheck that it's calibrated, 4Crawler has a good writeup here if you haven't seen it. If that checks out, look hard at the connector on the TPS and the wires to the ECU. A bad connection due to a damaged connector or wire will look like a bad TPS to the ECU.

If all the TPS tests pass at the ECU side of the harness and it's still throwing that code, you may have a flaky ECU.
