can't shift to 4h on the fly

Help,

I have a '94 v6 4runner with 4wd. I am having a problem with shifting it into 4h on the fly. I does nothing, the gear shift goes to 4h and nothing happens. But if I stop and shift to 4L then to 4h it engages and works fine. Also even when it is engaged there is no light letting u know its in 4h...not sure if there is suppose to be. So anyone that has a fix for this please let me know.

I think my vaccum lines are wrong.

Here is a picture of the setup, if anyone has a 94 4runner 4wd can you verify the correct setup?

I think the lines are right I will check in the day for you.

The shifting problem lies in your A.D.D. system, make any noise when you try to shift to 4H?


In my 93 there is a green light on the dash that comes on that says 4WD. Is this what you mean.

If so it should come on whether you are in 4H or 4L.

The light will come on if I put it in 4l and it stays on, if I then go to 4h It stays on, but If I am driving and I try to go to 4h from 2h it doesn't come on and does not go into 4wd. I now that it will go into 4l and 4h...but it has to go into 4l first. So I know that 4wd works, just not engaging from 2h. There is no noise at all. So somehow somethings fishy from 2h and I noticed that shifting from 2h to 4h has really no effect, no resisitance at all. Not sure if its suppose to.

From the manual:

To shift from H2 to H4

"The indicator light may not come on even if you shift into H4. If the vehicle is stopped, starting out the vehicle will turn it on.

If you shift to H4 on the fly it will not come on but if you stop then take off will it come on then?

I don't think it does come on even when I stop. I will give it a try tommorrow to make sure. Does my hoses look correct?

Mine is a 93 and are different. no T but the route is the same.

If I can get my POS digital camera to work I will take a pic.

(I think Santa is bringing me a new one)

Thanks Mike. I guess If I could get a vaccum line diagram of the ADD system, I could basically change all the lines and make sure that they are connected correctly. If that fails then it must be a bad switch or something.
