Car does not roll forward when stopped and put in Drive

Hello everyone
I have had this weird intermittent problem that occurs in my 99 limited 4X4 with 260K on the clock (all original under the hood).

Sometimes when backing out of my driveway when I go from Reverse to Drive the car will just hold still as if my foot was on the brake and not roll forward slowly like all cars do when in Drive. So once I slowly start accelerating there will be a jolt and it will then go forward like normal no issues.

It only happens sometimes and I am just worried about the clunking that happens sometimes when I go from Reverse to Drive. Anyone know what might be causing that? I am NOT mechanically inclined at all. Thanks

I had a "clunk" when going from a stop and driving but it rarely happened from Reverse to drive. Mine was just the slip yoke on the driveshaft that needed to be greased. It would roll ok when put in Drive though. You could try having the driveshaft greased (I think there's 7 zerks total) but I doubt that will solve anything but just the clunk noise.

Sounds like there's something more complicated going on with either your driveshaft, differential or transmission.

those have rear drum brakes, correct?

either way, I would check the brakes, and park brake cable.

My first thought is sticky rear brake drums...
Mine will do that sometimes when it's very cold...
Sounds like exactly what you are describing.

I would say check low tranny fluid.

also check the the rear brakes and see if they are hanging up.

I would think if the rear brakes were dragging though the OP would smell the burnt brakes after a drive? It's pretty noticeable.

Low transmission fluid. If not, then a sticky solenoid. There's a test procedure in the fsm to diagnose the solenoid but I think if you move from reverse to low instead of drive, and it never happens again, its a solenoid issue.

They are pretty easy to replace and I paid around $85 a couple of years ago. Its a great excuse to replace the filter and clean off the magnets.
