Don't shut it off:zoom:

Sorry, I couldn't resist.:satan:

1st thing I would do is check all of the exhaust system hangers to make sure that none are broken or missing. Sometimes one or more of these mounts will let go. Eventually you'd likely end up with an exhaust leak but a leak and a broken hanger do not necessarily go together. A loose exhaust would rattle and bounce around as the engine shuts off. 2nd possibility: Is the engine shutting off cleanly or is it continuing to run while making this noise? That condition is referred to as dieseling. It's popular to blame bad gas but in something as advanced as an 02 4Runner it's more likely a mechanical problem.

How about bad engine mounts?

I agree. Does the engine shake when you are idling? A lot of times the beginning signs that motor mounts are going bad show up when idling especially in drive but not so much in Park.

Gravedigging a bit here but they wont let me post my own thread until I comment 15 times... Did you ever find the solution for this? I just picked up an 04 and its got a couple weird things going on. I am working through them progressively but I'm getting this shudder on shutoff or occasionally a shudder during idle

Check the motor mounts
