Car washes and black 4Runners

For the 4R I use a touchlesss because of the rack, lights, ladder, etc. but for every other vehicles I just use the normal brush car washes. I know everyone says not to but I haven’t washed a car since the earlier 80’s and never plan to again.

And all vehicles I’ve had are / were black. Never had an negative issue or result. Ever.

Then you have really low standards for your cars paint! :becky:

First: want to adopt me?
Second: best bet is a ceramic coat, they’re amazing. Getting one professionally done isn’t that expensive and they last quite a while.
Third option: don’t worry about it.

I’d have a paint correction done then apply some ceramic coating to avoid future swirls. Then you can wash and dry with just water. I’d also recommend a rinseless wash, a bucket with a grit guard and a nice drying towel.

I really like my Wolfgang products - rinseless wash and spray detailing mist and spray on sealant.

I had all of this done to my '15 black Pro after the dealership I bought it from scratched up the clear coat washing it before I picked it up. Bunch of dopes.

I've never run mine through a regular car wash -- it's a pain but I hand wash, two bucket method, grit guards, etc. I think the OPs son should have a level of worry so that he properly takes care of such a nice vehicle. I mean,...what an amazing gift.

Run the car wash, don’t worry, it’s gonna get banged up no matter how careful your son is. After the semester ends have a paint correction and PDR company give it a once over.

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I primarily used brush-based drive through car washes on my previous vehicle (a black 2010 Nissan Frontier, which I owned for about 7 years) and never had any issues with the paint. Before I sold it, I had a professional full exterior detail done and the paint looked just as new as when I bought it. The factory paint on modern vehicles is pretty resilient, so I wouldn't stress how you wash it, just that you make sure the vehicle is washed regularly.

Guess it depends on what you mean by low standards. However I do marvel at and like so many of the pictures here showing such shiny showroom condition off road trucks while reading about which cleaner, wax, etc. is best.

I also don’t have slip covers on my couch nor do I name my vehicles so different strokes, I guess.

Nobody else lost antenna whip to the car wash?
Dealer performed 60K service and then, just to be nice, ran it through a car wash (the auto-brushy-kind) for free. Oops. Busted the whip off, leaving the stud in the antenna mount. They fixed it, but it was kind of a pain having to go back to the dealership (it's a 1.5-hour drive from here).

I'm avoiding any problems like that, by never washing my Runner. Mud looks good on it.
