Here are somethings I have observed with people (even myself, live and learn) washing their vehicles, I consider them bad ideas.
1) Drive through inferior "contact" car washes. In that I mean a car wash that makes physical contact with your car via brushes or clothes. Some car washes are poorly maintained and may leave your paint with some pretty undesirable results. There are some good drive through car washes, but why cleanse your car with the grime from the car in front of you?
2) Going through a 'touchless' car wash and then towel drying the vehicle. This style car washes only remove a certain amount of grime and placing a towel up to your paint is the equivalent of sandpaper.
3) Hand washing with bad water. Water heavy with minerals and or rust with leave a frustrating amount of spots. Take your bucket and accessories to the local pull in car wash and hand wash with soft water.
4) 'Stall' type car wash hand brushes...the guy before you just cleaned 27 pounds of mud from his truck with that brush. If you insist on using it, at least blast the brush with some high power water to clean it off.
