Well my car will not start. I was at a red light, reved my engine and it just quit. pulled of to the side of the road (power steering didnt work). Called my insurance company and had them tow me back to my house. The timing belt is fine and all vacume tubes are connected. the engine turns when i hit the key, but nothing happens even when i hold they key. Any help would be great

fuel. air. spark. its not getting one of them

engine codes?
are you out of gas?
any other details you could add?

well obviously the power steering won't work if the engine isn't running haha

I don't want to offend you for asking this but... Did it run out of gas?

I'm almost 100% sure i ran out of gas, but the gauge was showing 1/4 of a tank. May need to fix that up to get a correct reading

:bigok: :lmao:

downpour, don't go off laughing. I went to his house last night and tried to get it to fire up myself, and it didn't work.

I took off the timing cover, the belt was still good, thought that maybe it had snapped. Still cranked over... even sparked a few cycles until it keeled over.

Everything appeared fine. No codes, no CEL. EFI fuse was good. All vacuum connections on his new intake are good. That's why I'm surprised to find that Matt (TRDTeen) was able to start it this morning, in his driveway, meaning that the tank had enough fuel to start it.

I honestly have never experienced anything like this at all. Very odd. My 4 banger never once did anything like that.

I figured if the truck was out of fuel, it would only crank and not fire. Maybe the pressure was not high enough to keep it running. Then it starts today, in the same spot it was in, like nothing ever happened. If it was a faulty fuel gauge's fault, well it would not explain how it fired up.

downpour, if you can come up with an explanation to that, please, be my guest.

ahhhh i gotcha! yeah that's crazy man lol I was under the impression the fuel gauge was just off and he put more gas in it after he had it towed and the problem was it was just outta gas, at least that's how I read the posts.

That's not good though! Very strange. I'm interested to find out what the problem actually is now.

This probably won't help but I'll throw it out there. My 03 Mach1 (mustang) had an inertia switch that basically shut off the fuel pump in the case of a large jolt. I had it go off once when a box in my trunk hit it so they are kinda jumpy at times. I've had a couple friends just switch randomly and the car dies. Then once the switch is reset it runs fine. Not sure if the 4runner has anything like this but it was worth a shot.

Just to update everybody, everything is okay. I filled up today and the gauge went up to FULL. So I have no idea what happened that night.

So strange man. Doesn't make any sense, especially if it started right up after all that. My fuel gauge was messed up for a while til I put a new sending unit in. I would just gauge my milage on the trip odo so I knew when my tank was low. But if you're for sure your fuel gauge is messed up, throw in a new fuel sending unit.

Seriously though, I have NO idea what could have happened. I was in park, revved the engine to like 5k RPM, and a second time to 6500 RPM (almost rev limiter) and then the car just quit. nothing. then the next morning it started up fine no problems. The only thing i can think it was is that ive been having a belt squeal whenever i start the car up cold. (early morning) So instead of tightening the belt, i just put some belt liquid on it that makes the liquid sticky when it heats up and the squeak stops. Maybe when i revved the engine so high, the belt slipped and it didnt work... Sorry if none of that made sense...

Haha that's exactly why I replaced my fuel sending unit. I'd get to half a tank and then it would just drop to empty. Or I'd start the truck and the fuel gauge didn't work at all. Problem fixed though.

No I'm sorry I don't!
Basically, since you need to drop the gas tank, you'll need to make sure you only have 1/4 tank or less so the gas tank isn't so heavy lol.
Put a floor jack under the gas tank, unbolt the gas tank mounts and slowwwwwlyyyyyy lower the tank about 6 inches. You're gonna have to reach your hand up and snap off the wire harness/electrical. ****Make sure you don't pull out the wires from the harness!!!!!!***** Everything on top of the gas tank must be disconnected before you drop it. Lower it down and pull out the sending unit and pop the new one in, very simple. Then re-mount everything. Hard for me to describe without pics of the top of the tank. I'll see if I can find some pics online.

Try this: (You'll be blindly reaching up to disconnect this stuff so check out the pics)
