Tru, but if an accident is listed then it is good to know!
It does alert you to the big things that would cause you to think twice about a vehicle. I just saw one today with "Rental Vehicle." No thanks. I know what I do to rentals . . .

I wouldn't say it was worthless. There is some value there. Before I bought my T4R, I was looking at the Honda Pilot. I was about to pull the trigger and asked for the CAR FAX report. The dealer did not have one so I asked if I could use his computer. I paid the 35.00 one time fee and found out it was in an accident. Needless to say, I backed out and felt fortunate that I had paid for the CAR FAX report. That being said, my current T4R had a CAR FAX report was provided free by dealer. That report was terrible (only a few inspections stickers and unknown service records) compared to the Toyota Owners Website where I had entered the VIN number and found a three page history showing this truck has been serviced for its entire life (every 5K oil changes) at a Toyota dealer.

I purchased the 5 vin checks for $45 as I wanted to check out the car I was going to buy but also wanted to get a carfax for the car I was selling. I didn't realize it until now but I have to agree, it is awful. My car was in 2 accidents and neither showed up. I am with a major insurance company and repairs were done at a reputable shop. Cop showed up at both scenes. Unbelievable that neither accident showed up.
You're better off checking for accident damage yourself. Check for vin# on each panel and make sure it wasn't repainted, check to see gaps between panels are of equal distance, etc. I learned what to look for on the body and had a mechanic check out the moving parts.
Anyway, if you still want a carfax, send me a private message with your email address and I'll send you the carfax. I'll give it to you for what it's worth IMO; nothing. I think this is legal as I am not charging anything but if not, someone let me know. Thanks.

I wouldnt necessarily say Carfax and autocheck are useless. They serve their purpose. Bascially you can weed out the cars you dont want to look at based on the report. A few months ago I came across a clean 2004 Accord V6 6-speed. The car was clean and the seller sent me 50+ pics of the car inside and out. He had all service history from 2004 and was meticulous about his records. I was ready to buy and the car was 3 hours away.
Long story short. Pulled the carfax and autocheck and both reports listed severe front damage on the accident report. Saved me a 6 hour drive roundtrip. There cases where the damage is never reported to carfax or autocheck, but there's nothing you can do about an incident that was never reported. You'll have to use your own eyes and ears to find those issues. I would never base my purchase just on the Autocheck or Carfax alone, but its a great tool to help find a decent car.

Yeah, Carfax didn't show **** when I bought my car. Even the stealer from whom I bought it (used car division - Toyota dealer) just said "Whatever's on the carfax is what the truck has had."
Then I take it in for a CEL and the guy uses his little ipad looking device to tell me all kinds of service it has had over the years.
Just seems trying to get maintenance records is spotty at best unless it just happens to have been serviced at Carfax-related places.

Your mechanic should be able to do that at a PPI. Even then, it won't show any maintenance that the previous owner did themselves.
Another good website is the toyota owners website. You can add the vin # of the toyota you are looking to purchase add it as your own vehicle and it will import all the service history. But, the data is only good for cars that are serviced primarily at Toyota dealerships. Again, its still a good tool but doesnt do much good if the car is not serviced at a Toyota dealer.
If anyone is looking for an autocheck, let me know. I believe I have a couple more left before 3/1.

If you are in a serious shopping mood, then throw the money down to get a month's access to either of the car report places. It is well worth it. When I was shopping last summer it was like 19 bucks for a single, or 24/30 for a full month.
Obviously, in my opinion, 30 bucks is a low cost to have unlimited VIN pulls while you are car shopping.
Also. Understand that nothing is perfect and if they totaled their car, but their insurance never reported it (which under many conditions, happens) that truck will show up clean but be a mess.
So. Always pull the vehicle history, but... pay a good mechanic some money and have them GO OVER it. Make sure it is a shop that does body work. YOu need a trained and skilled mechanic who has eyes for the tell tell signs of body damage.
Have them throw it up on a rack and have them give it a good look.
Can you 100% guarantee? Nah, but having a good mechanic examine it, plus a carfax, is about as close as you can get.

12/21/2005 - ENGINE REPAIRS
ENGINE REPAIRS ~|~CUSTOMER REPORTS THAT THEY WERE ACCELERATING TO PASS AND THEY HEARD A LOUD NOISE AND THEN LOST OIL PRESSURE AND POWER IMMEDIATELY. CAR IS RUNNING REALLY, REALLY BAD AT PRESENT. ~|~INSPECTED AND FOUND A HOLD IN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE RIGHT ABOVE THE OIL FILTER. REPLACED ENGINE WITH A USED ENGINE THAT HAS 74000 MILES ON WE REPLACED NEEDED GASKETS,TIMING BELT,WATER PUMP, THERMOSTAT AND REAR MAIN SEAL BEFORE INSTALLING THE ENGINE ALL T ~|~ROAD TEST FOUND OPERATION NORMAL AT THIS TIME.
Hmm, interesting. Not so sure about this one now. I might be able to knock some of the price off of this thing though. Was at 82000 when ^^^ happened so it does have less than listed.
