Cargo area d-ring strength?

Hello,

I did some searches here and was unable to find an answer to a question I have.

How strong are the d-rings in the cargo area for the 2016 Trail???

Is the strength good enough to hold a 150 pound Honda CT70 minibike?

It's a 10mm bolt threaded into a nut welded under the floor.

I actually hook the bow line from my boat to it and launch the boat. The D ring stops the boat after it floats off the trailer. Been doing that for 6 years now, just about every week for most of the year...

They should be able to hold that minibike easy, but how? You laying it on the side?

PS- I remember riding one of those at my uncles house when I was a kid. Super fun!
 
I wouldn't think so. The bolts that hold the anchors in place are pretty small and I don't think the front set even go through the body. It may hold if you're just going around the neighborhood but I wouldn't trust them further than that. Now if you can figure out how to also incorporate the seat and seatbelt anchor points then you should be ok.

That's one sweet honda though. Many years ago I had a friend that had a few of those. We use to beat the hell out of them and they just kept going.
 
You can divide the weight of the bike by how many you are going to use.
Granted, you will only be putting the balance stress on them, not the full weight....

Or you could lay it down, then strap it down.

Check what the bolt strength is.


Make a decision.

I was planning on using all four of the D-rings with the bike standing up. The handle bars fold down but the soft strap tie downs I have should work fine.

I know it will balance and ride just fine standing up under normal driving conditions, but you have to plan for extreme braking and such.

Hence the question on those rings.
 
The two up near the backseat are attached to a metal bracket that then attaches to the body in some way. That bracket will bend before it fails. The two in the back near the hatch corners are directly attached with a nut cert and pretty strong. Your Honda is awesome and I would suggest using the seat back metal things (that hold the seat to the sides of the vehicle) as a side anchor to hold any side to side loading.

Everyone else: Just thinking about the strength of the hooks in a static condition is wrong. For example, if that Honda weighs 150 lbs, in a 55 mph crash the Honda will now have the energy around 1520 foot pounds! That's a lot of energy. Will the hooks hold 1500 lbs in an instantaneous jerk? Go take the bolt out of your seat belt mount. Look at the structure that holds that bolt. If I assume that the deceleration rate from 55-0 is 60 milliseconds then that ring has to hold around 6250 lbs! If I stretch it out to 1/2 a second (taking into account the crumple zones) then it ONLY has to retain around 2000 lbs... That's what is needed to hold those kinds of instantaneous forces if the driver weighs 150 lbs.
Still feel safe strapping 150 lbs of gear in the back?

Pretty sure those hooks are designed to hold something down to keep it from being jostled around in normal driving. In an accident? I don't think they will hold 150 lbs.

Don't over think this, you will be fine. :hug: I would be more worried about it actually fitting standing up, if you have to lay it down now I worry about fuel leaking out.

Greg points out the flaw in your question, static vs. dynamic so in short....Don't crash and you will have nothing to worry about

if the front ones are actually attached to a nut welded to something substantial they can take that kind of pull out force. what size is the nutsert for the rear? it might also be able to handle that kind of force, i know 1/4" plusnuts are over 1,000 lbs pull out for example with a straight axial load

I would be more worried about bending and shear than thread strength.
 
I'd imagine that toyota at least has a reinforcing backing there, I'd be more worried about the strap breaking than ripping the metal

I guess using a truck bed or trailer have their share of problems too.

Sometimes you have to makde do with what you have.
