Carnage: Gas tank skid

Heard and read about it, now I have experienced it. Took my 4R out for the first time since lift install. While in a really rocky wash, I heard a breaking sound. Later saw gas tank skid was ripped/torn by axle. I have an andjustable panhard bar as part my lift.

Other than that, minor detail, lift worked great. 4R did some major steps, steep hills and articulating washes. My friend broke his rear axle u-joint strap, where it connects to diff, on his jeep when he banged it on a large step.

Great day, Lots of fun!

I agree with Doozi--that's a LOT of lateral movement. Are you sure everything's hooked up right and functioning correctly? Your axle shouldn't be rocking that far sideways--it should rotate around the centerline, and move up and down, not side to side. I'd look it over very carefully before your next outing.

Passenger side wheel was on top of a big rock and drivers was in a hole. Front passenger was in a hole, front driver was on a rock. Could have been just the perfect situation. I will dbl check everything. I have seen others posts that this can happen with adj. Panhard vs drop bracket.

Mine did the exact same thing when I first flex'd it hard. I pulled my skid and trimmed off the piece that got ripped, replaced my ujoint zert and have been good to go since.

This is a common issue, especially with an extended panhard bar. I have worked with Steve (at Sonoran Steel) to maximize the clearance between the driveshaft and my aftermarket gas tank skid. We have eliminated this contact (when his adjustable panhard bar is adjusted properly). Steve runs my tank skid with his latest version of lift without contact.

Like the fuel and control arm skids. Gonna get both eventually. Could have used the control arm one today! Banged one pretty good on a step. I checked my ss panhard bar, it's the length given to me in the instructions from ss. Some people say it helps to be a little shorter than supposed to be in order to miss gas tank. What do you think?

Shorter will help keep it out of the stock tank skid but the key is to re-center the axle after the rig is lifted. Steve usually supplies a small alen bolt to replace the grease zerk (you will insert the zerk, grease, then replace with the alen bolt). This zerk is the one to grease the slip yoke. If you don't have one, you may want to pick one up. I'm still running with my zerk on and have no contact.
