Alright Guys/Gals,
Listen Up.
We had one last year that was a pretty good success in Clayton. While this one will be a little different, let's see what we can get done.
THESE OPTIONS ARE OPEN TO FAMILES.
While I know there are more men involved in this recreation than there are females, I DON'T want this to be a sausage fest. I don't want your wifes sitting at home, bored, while we're out having fun. I want them to come out and see what we do. See how beautiful some of the places we can wheel at are, and see what an overall good time WE have while doing it.
I know there are some people who have just had a baby, and can't really make it to these. If you could come out for a few hours, that's great. This is the Carolina Meet & Greet(KA POW!). We all have our rigs, see them all over the forum, possibly even see them in passing on the freeway or out in town. Let's get together, and share these beautiful hunks of metal, rubber, and glass.
I've come up with a few options.
1) We can do a beach thing for a weekend.
2) We can do a Uhwarrie trip for a weekend.
3) We can do The Flats for a weekend.
For all three of these options, I can get a LARGE grill (one of the ones you tow behing the rig) from base here on Camp LeJeune. We can do a "You bring it, You Grill it" type of thing, or I can collect money from people and get a bunch of burgers, dogs, chicken, porkchops, whatever you want me to pick up.
The other thing is the date. I now the 4th is right around the corner, and that people have vacations and stuff planned. Would something in Aug be a little better for everyone? Let me know what you have in mind, and we can go from there.
Option 1: The Beach
The Beach thing would be great this time of year. We can drive out onto Topsail beach, so we could even do a beach shot. There's places to rent jet-skis and all sorts of other stuff here as well.
I also plan on trying to talk to the Range Control guys here on base to see if there would be ANY possibility that we could get onto the HMMWV Confidence Course here on LeJeune. How well that would go over, I really don't know. I know the MPs here DGAF, as long as you don't get stuck. The only real way you're going to get out of some of the shit on this base is by a 7-ton wrecker, or something bigger. BlackBurn, the range control guys, are the ones you have to worry about. When we went to the field, they would come out and make sure EVERYTHING was picked up. Cigs butts, everything.
As I said before, all these events are family orientated. However, this would be more family orientated, because of the multitude of hotels around the area. We all know there are SOME women who can't go with out a shower; there are babies and young kids that wouldn't fair too well sleeping in tents, the back of the rig, ect.
Also, from Camp LeJeune, you could travel to Morehead City, the Outter Banks, Myrtle Beach, Emrald Isle, all those places that you see and hear of on tv.
This is probably the cheapest option, unless you got a hotel or something like that. Driving onto the beach is free, just gotta make sure that we don't do anything stupid like some of the Jeeps I've seen out there do. This is the only beach that's not within 4 hours of me that we can actually drive on. I'd like to keep it that way.
Option 2: Uhwarrie
Uhwarrie is another option because of the ease of camping. HOWEVER, the acess to the camp sites, the remoteness of Uhwarrie, and the lack of certain amenities might disuade some people from coming. Hopefully that won't be the case, and people would be more than willing to come to this option as well.
Uhwarrie has trails ranging from easy, to something that probably shouldn't be done. But all of us that have been there know that. Obviously, Daniel is the hardest trail to get up and over, BUT also offers the best view from the top.
The cost here would be 5 Bucks per rig per day, unless you have a season pass to Uhwarrie. Then it's free for you.....
Option 3: The Flats
The Flats is located in Marion, NC, exit 85 off of I40. This is a PRIVATE OHV park. The owner said that he is more than willing to open it up to groups. The next Open Invite to the park is in October.
This place is CRAZY. Right when you come in, there's a rock garden set up. He's got "The Hill", a bunch of concrete slabs that are on an almost 80° incline. The trails range from easy, so something that you're going to need a Truggy with a freaking AV-8B Harrier Rolls Royce Pegasus engine to get up. (No shit. One trail called "SuperMan" has an ≈5' wall at the end. Then there's the "Tank Trap".)
I think I've got some videos of a hill climb they did up there one weekend two years ago. It's insane.
Obvously, this would also be a Camp time. Unless you wanted to get up early as hell on a Saturday morning, make the drive to Marion, then drive back. There is a LARGE flat area where we would set up the "FOB". Stay there friday night, get up saturday morning, wheel, then we could stay there Saturday night, and all head out Sunday, or just head out from there Saturday night.
I believe the owner said that he charges 10 a rig, and 5 a head for for groups. I've got his contact information, so I'll get with him and verify with him.

Like I said, there are some places that I would be very careful in. But it's a blast over all.
