Not to hijack but...
I have a brand new in box carpet kit for Toyota Pickup Xtracab this will fit years 89-95. I no longer have this rig and don't need the carpet.. if anyone is interested PM me.

Darn, won't fit my application. Just as a follow up, received the samples mentioned in prior post, seems the carpet has a thin backing. The sample with the 'mass backing' is what I imagined the regular samples should be? If I decide to go this route likely include the mass backing and purchase the material to include the noise barrier while I am at it?

Personally, I was planning on mass backing... undecided on noise reduction material because I have the top off most of the time anyway.

Agree, the mass backing does appear to add; although slightly, an additional level of insulation? I will likely go with 'chris' link( thread #12): Amazon.com: Automotive Heat, Sound and Noise Insulation Padding: Automotive, then use a brand of aluminum tape to secure any seams and the perimeter which I used in securing padding install on the floor of the truck some 15 years ago and it's still holding up well.

I ordered 125 sq. ft. of Fat Mat for mine. Cheaper than Dynamat and should work well. I think I got enough to do the entire truck too.
digging up an old thread i know. can you tell me what samples you ordered? what carpet style did you end up going with?

Finally replying to this. Been meaning to get around to it and take some pictures.
I ended up just getting carpet, because I bought a used headliner.
I also ended up going with the closest carpet match instead of going darker.
I went with #2

M2005 is actually closest. Pic lighting isn't the best.
I ordered the carpet with the mass backing so it will be a bit thicker and sturdier. It hasn't arrived yet.
On the sound insulation bit. I recently used Al's Heat and Noise Reducer in my old Land Rover. Made a pretty big difference in sound and heat. When it gets time to do the carpets in the 4Runner, I plan on painting some of this stuff in the tub as well.
Bonus: Its cheap off of Amazon and prime eligible. I'd say 2~3 gallons is needed for my Gen 2 4Runner. I think a thick coat of heat and noise reducer, then either lay down some MLV (if I can bring the stock carpet back to life) or buy the fancy backing from the carpet peoples.
I've talked to people who say pull your interior, then go to a laundry mat, and stick it in one of those big washers with some Oxyclean or something like that. Cheap and easy way to bring carpet back. My carpet isn't torn/worn or anything. It just has stains.
But yes I'm going to fatmat the doors. Add a bit of weight will make a difference both in noise reduction and the feel of the door when you close it (I know that sounds stupid, but its super nice).
