Carputer plan for '03 Sport

I've decided to finally put together my first carputer. It's going to be simple for now: a laptop under the seat.

I have an 8 inch monitor. I don't want to put it in the double-DIN spot, because I want to keep my HU for AM/FM radio and because I don't want to be without a stereo whenever the carputer is on the fritz.

So, the only logical place I like for the screen is in that dead space in front of the shifter, currently occupied by a pair of cupholders that don't really hold cups and a little compartment that you can't really put anything in. The screen is a good fit for this space. But I will probably have some fabrication to do.

I would prefer to put the screen higher, buy I don't see a good way.

What I would really like to do is have the screen on some kind of adjustable (preferably telescoping) mount so that when I want it elevated closer to eye level, I can raise it by about 12 to 18 inches.

I have been looking hard for some kind of mount or stand that I could adapt for this purpose. Anyone know of some product that might be adaptable for this purpose? I'd like to keep it under $50 for this part. Ideally it would be a mount that I can move easily but which will retain its position as the vehicle hits bumps and things. (I will need to make the LCD tiltable too to adjust to its changing height.)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Any sort of pictures or specs? Also, what purpose are you trying to serve with the "carputer"? The name makes me chuckle a little- sort of like something from Knight Rider...
