CarTrimHome Android 9” Audio Replacement?

I found this guy when looking into an unrelated pro replica grill inquiry.

It appears to be a direct plug and play swap based on the pictures. Anyone already purchased one of these? I’m curious if the steering controls still work? No Apple Play but anything would be a step above the Entune.

I do have a connection over at CarTrim but I wanted an unbiased opinion from someone external to the company on how these perform. If there is enough interest, I can work on a group buy price to see how low we can get them.

No experience with the unit. But, if I was an android user and if I had a 4runner - I'd definitely be interested in that. I'm waiting on the 2020's.

I really like this unit, but it’s a bit pricy

Yeah, what I like about this CarTrim one is that it looks, to me at least, like an OEM unit. But I don’t want to dump that much money into something that freezes or is not technologically advanced. Plus, I’m an Apple/iPhone guy so I don’t know how that would mess with this given that it’s Android.

Got more information from another guy. It does look like it would retain the steering wheel controls but not sure about the backup camera or XM radio. Some data suggests this is only for 2013 through 2015 4R, but other data points suggest all fifth gens. I’m going to reach out and see what else I can find.

If you guys have any specific questions, please let me know so I can compile them into one massive inquiry and fire it off later this weekend.

if it retains steering controls and back up camera I'd be interested.

It does retain steering wheel functions and backup camera.
RETAINS VEHICLE INFORMATION
The iLX-F309FRN comes with an iDatalink Maestro Module to retain 4Runner features like the vehicle cluster sub-display and steering wheel controls. Other vehicle information such as tire pressure readings, open door alerts, and vehicle vitals are viewable on the large screen. The iDatalink Maestro Module is already pre-programmed for the 4Runner, so you don’t need to configure the module to your truck before installing it.

Find out how often it will get Android updates, including Pie.

There was a decently large thread on this on one of the T4R groups on Facebook. One user said he purchased it and said that the RAM was unbearably low for the unit. Meaning slow, unresponsive, and freezing. He said that if the unit had more on board RAM it would be definitely worth it. Also mentioned that they are actually due to release an updated version, for a higher cost with higher specs that people would likely be more interested in. I'd wait up and see when these come to market and how well they do before pulling the trigger, especially with a newer version coming out in a few months.

Appreciate it. I decided to pull the trigger on this last night. I was told everything from the stock unit would work with this unit - backup camera, steering wheel controls, radio, etc.

I’ll keep y’all posted on the status - both good and bad.

If you are interested in having Apple Carplay with that, here is the link to a product on Amazon that can do that. https://amzn.to/2Etd8YL

This seems like a good idea, i am interested
It works with any android device, including tablets, radios, and phones. So any android device can have carplay run on it. The only issue is power for the phones and tablets. Luckily I have a tablet that has a usb port and a charging port so that is not an issue for me. For phones, you would need an OTG cable and a power and data splitter cable.

I’ve had a handful of people send me DMs about the head unit.

I’m going to talk to the manufacturer tomorrow to see what price I can get for a group buy, but I need to see who would be interested if I was able to get the price down to $450 or $475? I’m not saying they will agree to anything, but I’m going to ask. I just need numbers to support me asking for that low of a price.

I’ll also ask what kind of warranty these carry. I don’t see it being anything fantastic given that these are coming from China so I’ll also ask them to explicitly state what is or isn’t supported.
