So my catalytic converter is rattling around and driving me INSANE!! I know there are heat shields and diff things inside that cause this but Im trying to figure out what to do. And yes, it is def the cat...
Problem is, its not a bolt on but also isnt throwing any codes..Im debating whether its causing any MPG loss either..
Should I just wait for it to blow out and hope for the best..? Or does anyone have a suggestion..? I live in Oregon so emmissions are a huge deal here...
Thoughts??

well i'd just replace it. not only to stop the annoying noise, but with a newer cat (assuming you have high mileage) you may see a bit of a performance/mpg boost. nothing too fantastic, but nice nonetheless.

yeah you can find a universal generic cat for under $100 online, i think its a 2.25", you could use one of those or a 2.5 and just have it graduated up to adapt to the larger diameter. where in oregon are you? portland area?

No im down in the Eugene area..ok replacing sounds like a good idea. That noise is gonna be the death os me haha :)

well darn if you was in the portland area id say hit me up sometime, and come out to our shop and id weld it in for you... but be that way, live two and a half hours away :bigok:

Is the rattle inside or outside? The heatshields are external clamshells that bolt on. I've had to replace at least half the factory bolts. When one breaks, that external can makes a pretty good noise. The fix is five minutes and less than a buck to put in a new nut and bolt.

Of course, if the honeycomb broke loose and is rattling around inside the can, then the cat is toast and a P0420 is in your future. But with no code, I'd say there is a good chance your problem is the external shield and can be fixed with a little effort. As a last resort, you can even rip the shield off, if you can't restore the fasteners. Time to get underneath and look...my apologies if you have already done that.

I have looked but I will again and look more closely...thanks for the reply :) if all else faills and I can't see what your talking about, I'll take a picture and see if you can point it out. I like $2 fixes :)

You can get it to stop rattling by hitting it or with a c-clamp. Be easy but you want to squish the body if you know what I mean.
