Catalytic converter (gone), Muffler (damaged)

I am sad to say I got hit last night for my converter and my muffler was damaged. I am looking at excess of $800 in repair costs. I am so frustrated because I live and work in very large areas and do not have access to garages or private parking.

Apparently Toyota trucks and SUVs are in high demand because they sit higher. I wonder if the converters themselves have more precious metals than other car manufacture converters.

This type of damaged hurts the worse. You cannot trek it, it can happen again, and can cause your insurance rates to increase w/ excessive claims.

Sorry to hear about that. I have heard that they are popular to steal from because they are high from the ground. The reason Cats are in valuable is because you can't buy a used one at the junkyard, you have to buy new according to the smog laws because they lose effectiveness over time.
How will it cost $800? The silver lining is that you can get a high flow cat for really cheap and a better muffler too.

Sorry to hear that. Will your insurance cover it? Maybe invest in some BudBuilt skids and belly pan. They cover all the way to the rear of the converter. A good investment anyway if you wheel your truck.
 
The reason the converters are on the hot list is because they have platinum in them. As we all know, the value of metal has been skyrocketing.

Jesus... they're now doing 3rd gens? I didnt think someone would really go through the trouble of actually cutting...


My 3rd gen has the cat bolted on because I put on new headers and welded a custom flange to the cat to bolt right on....


Anyone know how to secure bolts? I got a letter that was rather interesting. The great thing about the letter, I was doing the header work when I got it so my cat wasn't in... lol made me crack up.
 
Sorry to hear about your loss cityhopper, mine got stolen a couple of weeks ago and it cost me $1,700 worth of repairs. Mine was covered by my insurance though but I still had to fork over $500 for my deductible. I got so of my rig being messed with, I even moved. I thought stealing cat. converters were rampant in Cali only because of our smog laws, I guess they are doing it all over the country. Anyway, sorry to hear about your loss again. I know the feeling. They are pricey because I got a quote for my 2000 Limited 3.4L and they wanted $350 which includes the special tool for put the clamp on. In my opinion, a thief who knows that he is doing will still do anything to get your cat. converter but hopefully will move onto an easier target after seeing the clamp. Still haven't gotten it though but I am very close to pulling the trigger.

That's actually a clever idea... I think I'll do that... ironically I do not have those either in my $8,000 tool box amongst my $8,000 in tools... I've got the wrenches...

(rofl, I've got a folding craftsman 192 piece set and that's about it)

I wouldn't bother. Thieves use battery powered Sawz-Alls to remove catalytic converters. It literally takes 30 seconds to cut one out, where unbolting it would take minutes (at least).
