Catalytic Converter Info

Hi there,
Someone decided to steal my catalytic converter.
Trying to save some money.
They also took the flanges with it as well.

Has anyone used a Walker 93303 cat?
Or any other universal cat?

The Walker is 13" long x 7.5" wide x 4.5" high.

Or if someone has straight piped how much louder is it?
I know that will give me a CEL but will it also affect performance of fuel mileage?

thanks

I have no experience with that Walker cat but a quick search came up as an Ultra EPA cat almost $550 CAD - ouch. Since the flanges are gone any you need more work than just a direct fit cat why not look into something like a Magnaflow 94005 - $170 CAD, It's Stainless, Stock size 2.25" in/out, slip fit so it can slide over at least 1 connection, then you just need some pipe and a flange. Not sure about the emission rating on it though. Do they even have emissions testing in Manitoba?

I just re-did my exhaust and looks like someone got halfway through trying to steal my cats, upstream of the muffler was cut clean through but it was still butted up tight, my muffler had a hole anyway so exhaust was louder already. My truck is California emissions so it's different and has 2 cats (US import to Ontario)

I never thought of Magnaflow, thanks!
I see Amazon has them so I could send it back if I can't get it to work.
If I got that one I might try and use adapters and clamps with it.
I can get the Walker from Rockauto for 285 CDN delivered and it has 2.5" ID.

No emission testing in Manitoba.

Straight piped isn’t really much louder if the rest of the exhaust is stock
That's good to know.
I might go that way for the time being.
I have time constraints. If i don't get it done in the next week I'll have to wait till the fall.

I think I'll get my local garage to weld in a straight pipe. They won't charge much.
I don't have much room between the end of the cut pipe and the O2 sensors.
It will be difficult for me to use clamps and get a reliable seal.

After the straight pipe is installed I can cut part of it out to install the cat.
The pipe they put in will be the same diameter on both ends making the cat install easier if I get one with the same size inlet/outlet.

If time is a big issue like you say then I would agree in just doing a pipe for now and address it properly when you have more time. As long as you still have a muffler it shouldn't be horrendous, if any major difference at all.
Does URD still make O2 simulators? I'm fairly sure they stopped, but if you were to manage to snag one I assume that would greatly assist in the fuel economy drop you'd experience in the mean time.
Edit: someone on Tacoma World asked Gadget and it seems that they have cancelled production for the time being, presumably in favor of their tuning module being sold at double the price. Maybe an O2 spacer would help keep codes at bay in this case

I replaced my converter with a universal Walker and muffler with a universal Magnaflow 12255. So far the new converter has been working just fine (I would expect the same for you as long as you fix what killed it). As for the Muffler, its a little loud for my preference. Wish I went with a larger one in retrospect, but that's all subjective.

I also bought a bunch of 2-bolt walker flanges from RockAuto to weld up and button everything up. I mimicked the OEM exhaust flanges by extending the pipe past one of the flanges at each joint to slip inside the opposing flange and pipe. Then I slipped a FelPro exhaust gasket with an integrated compression ring over the extended pipe and bolted it up. This helped everything align nicely and reduced the chance of exhaust leaks. Worked well for me.

A good number of my welds were between OEM stainless exhaust components and aluminized steel (like on the MagnaFlow inlet/outlet). I will assume you're welding and recommend getting the correct wire to weld stainless to mild steel.

Hope some of this helps.

Edit: Looks like you're getting a shop to do it. Well maybe this will help someone...

That really sucks dude. You know for now, if things are really tight, (keep your head down and attack debt, it’ll get better) Just get a chunk of straight pipe and seal clamp it, even if it isn’t perfect.

If you can swing the shop option, that may be the best way to go and do a weld on, maybe even weld new flanges.

One fringe benefit of my 3 heavy for 4XI plates is that the tweakers are going to have to work their ass off, deal with large allen head hardware and hilariously heavy plates to get the cats out….. lol. Summary judgment on the street side should be allowed for the people that do this kind of theft…… unfortunately, with the influx of people moving here from out of state, I have a feeling that cat theft is going to be a thing around here too soon. Seems to be a real lack of collared shirts present with all my new found fellow Idahoans………

I redid the section with cats from the header flange to a Gibson Catback in 304 SS using 308L filler. The Gibson is 409 SS and the 02 flanges are mild steel, used 309L filler for all joints not 304 to 304. First Tig welding project, not Youtube worthy but was able to cobble it together.

My 2WD has California emissions my 4WD has Federal emissions.

Both passed smog here in California, but eventually the cat will need to be replaced, and the correct MagnaFlow model for my Federal Emissions 4WD is $400 because it has to be CARB approved

The same NON-CARB version FE cat is $285

If I lived somewhere where emissions testing was not required, I would cut out the California emissions, and go for a single cat
