Catalytic Converter Question

My 2000 Sport Edition 4Runner got the engine light. Toyota diagnosed it as bad cat converters and wants $2700 to install new ones (I live in CA). My objective is to use aftermarket, but there is a speed bump:

I've read on other forums that the 2000 model registered for smog approval late in CA and hence the after-market guys didn't produce one for the 2000 model? Also, I read that the 2000 Toyota Tundra aftermarket parts with the CA smog cert will fit perfectly fine? If I use the Tundra part, it will pass smog right? It's not like they look at the part numbers etc right? I need to confirm all of these things before going forward with the 2000 Tundra cat converters.

If I can use the Tundra parts, how much am I looking at for parts and labor?

I would get a second opinion...it is probably the O2 sensors that are bad. Steelerships make more money on cat replacements than on O2 sensors. My Calif. '96 4Runner SR5 has 255,000 miles with original cat and it just passed the CA smog test fine. I am on my 3rd set of O2 sensors.:fro:

Yes it will.


There's another thread that I outlined the best way to tell if the cat is really bad, given you have access to a scan tool.

Guys, I forgot to mention that I did get the code P0420. I will get a second opinion from a shop with a scan tool to determine O2 sensors vs Cats.

Im in the same boat as you, I just ordered an aftermarket cat for about $200 for my cali spec 99 4runner. I'm gonna have to cut the old one off and bolt up the new one.

FYI i know my cat is dead cause it has a hole in it at the top of where the shroud is.

since your're in cali, i dont think your legally able to buy/install a cat unless you're a mechanic ???? the reason i say that is because all the websites i found say that they cant sell or ship a cat to a cali address.

The websites say that about most cats because they don't comply with CARB, which makes them illegal for California vehicles. The selection of aftermarket cats for California emissions is pretty slim but they are out there.
