Catalytic Converter Replacement - CA emissions

Hello Everyone,

I am having some difficulties trying to buy a replacement catalytic converter for my 2010 T4R SR5 4.0L V6. My 4runner has the California emissions cat converter and I live in NY. I really don't want to spend close to 1K for one cat converter, and i have being looking for replacement parts on ebay and another sites but they do not sell or ship cat conv with california emissions to NY.

At the beginning i would hear some loose parts right underneath the driver side. i got underneath the truck and didn't see anything loose. Then, i started to smell the rotten egg kind of smell, and finally brought it to my mechanic. It seems that the rear left cat converter is damaged. The check engine light is still off.

I would appreciate if someone can let me know where to buy a replacement cat converter with cal emissions in NY.

How many miles are one your vehicle? I would expect a cat to be covered under the 7 year /70K mile emissions warranty.

Check with a dealer, under fed law anything emimisions has to be covered for an extended priod...

Unfortunately, I have almost 90,000 miles on it, so the emissions warranty would not cover it.

You will probably have a hard time as you've found out.

Last I heard when I was on the dealer side in California (last year), CA cats are serialized and for the most part can only be bought new from the Dealers because of how strict they made the laws.

Additionally you as a private individual or even a business cannot send them to recyclers without proper paperwork such as work orders, verified VIN, and so on of the vehicle the cats came from. I imagine this also translates to a ban/difficulty in shipping them out of state. It's all to "protect" the public from catalytic converter thefts... by making them impossible to get anywhere but the dealer who's gonna mark them up insanely.

I'd give [MENTION=78968]oljedi11950[/MENTION] 's a shot as they may have a way to do it legally. Last I checked you can't even get them from a junkyard anymore due to legal issues.

there are enough guys around here who have done long tube headers, you should be able to find a used one for a reasonable price from one of them I would think

I'm almost positive all vehicles sold in N.Y. And N.J. tri-state area have California emissions. No Need to get one from Cali.

Try calling toyota corp? Maybe there is an exception ? 90k and a dying cat? There has to be an underlying issue to cause this.. Or I suspect you might get the same issue again.

You would know better than me BWInc ! It was awhile back on my 03 Tacoma had them send whole exhaust to me with converter maybe 05 or so ? anyway Urd has all the current headers that fit 2010-thru including their custom fit ones which to me appear like the trd ones ? :decision:

I own a repair shop in California and we do emissions work all the time. I checked and there is no aftermarket catalytic converter available at this time that can be either sold in California or to NY for 4Runners with California emissions. Aftermarket catalytic converters have a part # and eo # stamped right on the heat shield. The cats get installed so the #'s can be read when the smog tech crawls under the vehicle to check to see if the cat that's on the car is compliant. This is in California and I do not how it works in NY. I think that all vehicles these days meet California emissions even though they are not being sold in California so you may have issues with a distributor shipping you a catalytic converter with this in mind. I've had several customers try to order non-compliant cats via the interwebs because they thought they'd be slick and save money only to find out that the vendor won't ship because they themselves don't wanna get into hot water w/ C.A.R.B You're best bet is to find a used one. As long as it's off of a 4Runner that has the exact 100% same emissions package and engine family (located on the underhood emissions label)

here in NYC I believe they just look for the codes.

here in NYC I believe they just look for the codes.

Here in NY we have California emission vehicles, but not the strict Cali. inspection process. They just hook up to your computer and as long as your not throwing any codes you should be good. They don't even look at any thing other than brakes and lights.

Thank you for checking that out. I guess I will have to keep on looking at the Junk Yards and craigslist. I am afraid that if there is a problem with the rear left one, now there may also be a problem with the rear right since that was the only one working.
