Has anyone had any luck replacing one or both cats with a brand other than Toyota? I have an 01 4runner with 118k miles. I'm getting a P0432 code. I replaced both 02 sensors with no luck. I refuse to spend $2500 for Toyota cats. I've heard any cats other that oem will still throw codes. Has anyone proved this wrong with an aftermarket oem fit cat?

the last time I replaced a cat on my own personal vehicle (04 chevy aveo) i ordered a direct fit cat from discountconverters.com it was half the cost of what chevy wanted. it fit perfect and it was on the aveo for 40,000 miles without any problems. I sold the car 2 months ago so I could buy my 4runner LOL. I dont know if discountconverters.com has a direct bolt on for the 4runners but it doesnt hurt to check them out at least
I'm not sure I would trust one from discountconverters.com without confirmation of one being used on a 4Runner.
From what I've read on the forums, 4Runners are very temperamental with non-Toyota converters. The Walker Ultra is advertised as having a higher loaded substrate. I would be more comfortable with one of those.

Which catalytic converter is the bad one?
Is there a way to isolate the bad one or do most replace both. I didn't get a check engine light (P0432) until I repaired the exhaust leak coming from the gasket between the two cats. Would this be an indication of which one is bad? Both A/F (oxygen) sensors are new.

It's easy to get into a progressively more expensive downward spiral with exhausts... I had to replace my cat last year (cracked internals = buzzing sound) and tried Walker parts. Had a heck of a time 'cuz RockAuto kept sending me pipes that didn't fit. I ended up going to a non-chain muffler shop and the guy welded a Magnaflow onto Walker pipes for about $300 for me. Charged me $230 for the cat.
I waited until platinum prices went up last summer and sold my old cat on ebay for $300. Don't know what they are going for now but you might be able to recover some $ that way.

URD has them but idk if they list them on the website, so give 'em a call.

have had one on the tacoma for years now and it was cheaper than a new o2 sensor. That way if the aftermarket cats dont work exactly right due tot he finicky nature of the 4runner you still won't throw a code for it.

I've got a URD sim sitting in a box, waiting for the day that I replace my clogged cats with a nice shiny high-flow cat. Only way to get a single high-flow to NOT throw a code is to use the sim. For $100ish, you can't go wrong.
