Catalytic converter smell........

My 03 T4R is really smelly when you get on the gas. I only smell it inside if the hatch window is open, but I'm curious if this is a problem. Could the cats be going bad, yada yada, or is this a normal smell for these vehicles?

Thanks
Dave

Completely normal. That said, there was a TSB issued to install a "less smelly" cat, but most guys say it doesn't help much.

There are like a bazillion threads on this if you want to look for more information.

Thanks Jed, I should have looked in the archives first. Damn things are really smelly though.

Have you heard of anyone having any success with the Cat cleaner that you put in the Gas?

Nope, haven't heard that...but some people report less smell with different types of gasoline. Still though, the cats gonna stink when you're hard on the gas pedal.

I think the only REAL solution is to swap out the Toyota cat with an aftermarket unit.

i had mine done on my 4r about 1-2 months ago with new manifolds also. now im not easy on the go pedal and i drive with the rear window down. there is a night and day difference in power and smell. neither cat was clogged and passed emissions perfectly before the change. i will get a minor sulphur smell if i stay on the gas for a while but nowhere near what it was before.

I am going to be doing the angled mod, for the main reason of towing. We were towing our camper this year and the vacuum between the camper and truck caused the odor permiate the whole truck with the windows up.

happens to mine. i just choose not to drive with the rear hatch window down. if u have dog just a small crack should do u just fine.

I had the dealer do the TSB and it seems to have worked. I have zero sulphus smell now. I'm not sure about this but it feels a bit slower now. I know they had to reprogram the ECU. It may be my mild paranoia (with dealerships) acting up again.

I'd like to do the tailpipe mod anyway. If the sulhur smell was coming in that way, I'm sure carbon monoxide/exhaust fumes is too....just can't smell that as easily or at all.
