Interesting concept. Paint is heat resistant

Central Va. police are doing this in hopes to stop catalytic converter thefts

My own personal deterrent...

motion detector flood lights, and a nicely scoped...it deterred Sadam Hussien.

They are also etching the VIN on them

I was thinking of painting mine with poison ivy juice.

I still think having some protective shield, rebar cage, other viable semi permanent solution is best. For many thieves, they won’t even care about paint or numbers. The hassle of coming out of some place and having a cat missing, especially on a trip out of town, isn’t worth not having some protection that makes it very difficult and time consuming to get to them. Just my opinion. I should talk. I don’t have anything yet. Painting is “possibly” better than nothing.

A 240v inverter, some wire, and a relay tied to the door locks. Allegedly.

Can't the thieves just take some wire brush or paint thinner to remove the paint?

Apparently the idea is that buyer will know they are stolen, thus will not buy. Would it work as a deterrent, who knows, but it is free so can’t hurt to do it.
