Catalytic Converter Theft Discussion

I wonder if adding skid plates on the bottom would be a deterrence but a full set of plates can cost as much as a new converter.

I got a cat cover from Talon garage... its basically a trans skid plate made from aluminum.

Hopefully its a deterrent to the thieves and they try another vehicle.

If you don’t think politics affects our trucks and what we can or cannot do with them, well you are living in an alternate universe. Politics has a lot to do with the possibility of getting your catalytic converter stolen.

but! smog check for us is now 8 years from new. i think it used to be 4 or 5 years from new.

unfortunately politics does play a huge part in the automotive world.
from restricting the amount of imported autos so that American auto can survive to carb restrictions.
Living in California is the worst for any car enthusiast. We now have a new law where they're checking for any ECU tune. We're a driving state. we have the worst transportation system and they keep making it harder and harder for us to just live (car life).

also LA's DA Garcon is not improving anything here. All these thefts happening from retail to catalytic converters. anyone caught are just put back onto the streets with a slap on the hand. My cop friends dont even want to deal with petty theft anymore. all the paper work they have to fill out and for what. the losers are just released right after.

I put one on a few months ago. Went on ok and does not rattle. As much to reduce grass hitting the hot cats as the theft issue.

Scratching your VIN in the cat will do nothing for you. I've seen how a catalytic converter scrap yard works and they deal in bulk so they can look at a cat and in 1 second determine the value without actually looking at it for any markings. As far as welding the Cat in place that really wouldn't matter either as the crackhead who cuts it out is just going to use a saws all and cut the pipe on each end and in 10 seconds away he goes.

Your best bet is to hope it never happens to you.

And yes many manufactures are using less precious metal in new cats. Older GM cats had high levels and could fetch a hundred or more at a scrap yard. No the average person cannot extract these metals at home......

Exactamundo...We have a rash of Prius Cat thefts here in San Francisco, but all older ones. The story on the news was that the older emissions technology couldn't clean the exhaust as well as today's systems, so they needed more Palladium/Platinum in the older Cats. Newer cars have less precious goodies inside, so not worth as much for scrap.

My SIL runs a side business where he buys and parts cars - he works at a recycling center by day so he really knows what has a value and what does not.

He buys shitty, old cars that no one would bat an eye at... because he knows exactly how much money he will make for selling the cat, scraping the wheels, and scraping the car. If you have the title, a scrapper can pay you for recycling the car's frame and such. He is quite efficient at it!

That's exactly what I got. I got the front skid and the cat protection. I am still waiting for the temp outside to get a little cooler....
