Well the engine isn't throwing any codes but it's rattling like hell and I'm getting the dreaded rotten egg smell. I really don't want to spend $200 on a new cat, can I get away with a Magnaflow cat or do I need an OEM one? Any other suggestions? I want the cheapest one that won't throw any codes, will make me pass emissions, and won't rattle like crazy.

magnaflow would probably work, and not throw any codes, i ran one on my IS300 for about a year before it destroyed itself, rattling like crazy in the middle. My IS probably seem more extreme exhaust temps than your 4runner, so you would probably be okay for a while w/ it. As far as passing emissions, not familiar w/ your states testing, so i can't help you there.

Magnaflow will be fine. There 49 state carb legal and shouldn't throw any codes. Some ppl have report that they have thrown codes with a magnaflow but I have and it's been there for 2yrs now. So far so good. No complaints here.

should work just fine when mine goes bad i will most likly go magnaflow. also if you have any troubles with a code for low cat flow you can get a box from urd performance that will take flow reading and make it so it shows ecu within correct reading so it wont set CEL.

Are you sure you are 49 State? Lots of Cali 4Runners were sold outside CA, especially late in the '99 model year run. I bought mine in NJ in May '99 and it's a Cali. This is because the 2000 50-state is pretty close to the Cali. '99 two-cat set-up.

Aftermarket set-ups frequently throw codes, especially on Cali. set-ups. So be prepared.

I am planning to change my Catalytic Converter and planning to shift into aem. But as per your post, megaflow is ok, having a second thought.

I gutted mine and built an o2 simulator from spark plug non fowlers. it's been coming up on 2 years and still no engine light.
