Catalytic Converters Replaced

Yesterday the dealership replaced both catalytic converters, no charges, on my '06 V8 SE. I had the well known sulfur smell problem, though the truck has only 9,000 miles on the odometer. I was delighted that they agreed to do this with no hassle.

Driving home I opened the rear window with the driver side window open, and got a strong exhaust smell. After I parked in my garage, the exhaust smell was very noticeable. It wasn't the sulfur smell, it was more of an exhaust/metallic smell. I called the dealership and the technician told me this would be normal for a while, as the new cats get 'broken in'.

Is that true?

Yes the fumes are horrible when they get replaced. They burn off whatver kinds of coating is on them. The sulfur smell will be back after that smell leaves. Mine never went away.

I just took my wife's '05 SE V8 in last week to have the cats replaced under the TSB. When I got the vehicle back, I had the same issue. This is definitely normal. It will go away after you drive it for a while. I recommend a longer trip (20-25 miles) at higher speeds. This will help get rid of the smell sooner. My wife and I have noticed an amazing difference in the smell coming out of the tail pipe when heavily accelerating. The smell is almost completely gone now! I hope it continues this way.

could you post the part number of the new cat?

I don't have the numbers with me. Just do a search for TSB. It is in there. Make sure that you print out the TSB and verify that the VIN of your Runner is within the range for replacement. That's what I did. I had no issues whatsoever getting the cats replaced. Hope this helps.

The part numbers for the two cats are: 17410-50490 and
17450-50131.

there were some members who had the service done, but the dealer ordered cats with part #'s that did not match the tsb

I gave the dealer a copy of the TSB when I complained about the sulfur odor.
And when the replacement was done I checked the invoice part numbers against the TSB part numbers, and they all matched.

Ditto. The invoice that I got had the part numbers on it. They matched the TSB.

What is the warranty on the Cats? I have the sulphur odor too BAD, but i have an '03 V8 Limited that I just bought, so am I out of luck or does the cat have a 7 year 100,000 warranty or anything like that? My T4R only has 59,000 miles on it. It is my understanding that it has to be under warranty to be covered on a TSB right??

The TSB (EG005-06) is specifically for the 2006 with the 2UZ-FE V8 engine. There may be other TSBs for other years, I don't know.

At the bottom of my TSB it says that the repair is covered under the Toyota Specified Major Emission Control Component Warranty, and it's in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles from the vehicle's in-service date.
