Cats on my 4Runner

So, I've been dealing with a new problem since I moved into my neighborhood... cats spending their time on top of my 4Runner!

I don't know what to do! There are about 2-3 different cats that do it, and I don't know who they belong to, if anyone. Since I'm still new in the area I'm not ready to start ticking off neighbors. What's worse, when a cat is on your car, there is not much you can do... If you try to pick them up or shoo them off, they will extend their claws and scratch it :upset:

I didn't realize how bad it was until I went camping a week ago. My 4Runner accumulated a bit of dust, and the next morining after getting back there were cat prints all up and down my hood, and a nice streak where it slid down my windshield.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm ready to go :goinposta

that really sucks, i have had the same problem recently in my neighborhood as well. I was leaving sams club one day and there was a g500 out there and there were a lot of crows hopping around all over it and pecking at it and stuff?? anyways, im guessing theres not really a practical solution to this, but put some gormet cat food on your neighbors car before you go to sleep. or you could lay a spike strip down. I was trying to think of the cars that flip out (alarms) when you get to close, but in the middle of night, prob not a good idea.

ok but seriously a coulple of real solutions:

the reason they are on your car is because of the warmth, apparently your 4runner stays warmer longer than any of the neighbors or maybe they have garages.

1) Put a fake animal on your car to imitate that something else has taken its spot.

2) Put a bunch of rubber snakes on the roof and hood. the cat will wonder around the car for hours before actually jumping up to find out what it is up there. (cat might try and kill snakes though)

3) I know that a number of places make pads that deliver a mild shock to cats when they jump on the pad area - maybe one for the hood, roof, and trunk lid? There are also ultrasonic and chemical odor devices at this link:cat pads

O'MAN, I HATE CATS!!!!!!

The neighbor across the street has 5 cats that all love to lounge in my yard and driveway. Every morning I find my black 4Runner covered in paw prints as well as the dreaded skid mark down my windshield!!! Normally, I would kill, skin, then hang their carcasses from my neighbors roof like a bloody meat chime, but this particular neighbor is married to a really cool guy that also happens to be an electrician. I'd be careful using shock devices when it's not your cat; yes, even on your own property.

I'm not sure exactly what the laws are there in Georgia, here is Missouri you can get in some trouble for even pretty minor things against other people's pets. The laws are getting more severe against animal abuse because they're finding all these sociological links to spouse/child abuse.

Don't take me the wrong way, I'm not a tree hugger or a PETA fanatic; I totally understand why you want the cats to stay the heck off your truck. (And, if you wanted cats, you'd get your own, right?)

But, I'm a vet student and just the other day, I was working in the clinics and had to talk to the police about a man who was spraying his neighbor's dog with the hose when it wouldn't stop barking. ("No sir, the dog isn't harmed in any way.... Yes sir, theoretically, if the man climbed over the fence, held the dog down and, shoved the hose down his trachea, then he could have drowned... but, as is, he's just wet!"). I think the guy still had to pay a fine, or something....

Just check it out before you leave traps for their animals because you might be hurting someone's "poor baby"
 
It just a worthless cat. Leave some kitten chow laced with rat poison around your car. Problem solved!

If we were talking about a dog, that would be a different story!
 
Instead of being an ass and trying to harm the cats... Why not just get a car cover? Problem solved, and protects you from any other outside harm as well.

Unless you plan on eating the cats, I would just let them live.
 
I'm not a cat person either! I've encountered a few I liked, but those are typically the ones that think they are dogs. I definitely considered the BB gun approach... a harmless little pop in the rear could be very entertaining :D

Seriously though, I had no intention of harming the cats... that was the whole point of me posting this thread... more creative approaches to saving my paint job. I don't like cats, but that doesn't mean I hurt them. So, no need to call me an ass.

That Scat Mat looks pretty interesting... shame it costs so much.

That's crazy about the guy spraying the dog! Don't worry, I intend to be careful. I read earlier that setting out crushed moth balls or red pepper in the area around the car also deters cats... I may try that. Getting a car cover is a last resort, seeing as I'm constantly coming and going, and it only takes a cat a few minutes to take a nice walk on my roof.
 
I have the same problem in my neighborhood.....and I feel your pain because I HATE CATS and it pisses me off. I had dogs for years and they never left my yard/screwed up other people's stuff. Yet these fuckin cats scratch up vehicles in the driveway and dig up flowers/plants around the house and garden.

Why should it cost ME money/time because some jackass wants to let fluffy roam free all night???

I'd love nothing more than to kill the basterds.....but it'd probably be some kid's pet, so I'd feel bad.....so I have to settle with trying to catch them with the hose/car alarm :(

I know EXACTLY what you are going through! :(

I found out less than a week after getting my Brand New 4Runner that a cat liked to sleep on it! The morning I found it I was startled and so was the cat... who proceded to jump off my hood and left 2 HUGE scratches! :mad:

I was so mad I called the police & then animal control. Neither one could do anything even though this was a stray cat. The only option was for me to catch or kill the cat.

All I will say is this...

That darn catg will NEVER scratch my 4Runner again!

I LOVE animals. Cats, dogs, birds, heck... even certain rodents. But when one damages my brand new $40,000 vehicle... !! :bash:


I suggest using poison or baiting a trap to catch them.
 
Forget the BB gun, I always thought thats what airsoft guns were for. Just a little sting. But try to hit them BEFORE they jump on your 4R otherwise they will leave scratches trying to scramble off the hood.
 
I do not have first hand experience of this with cats but someone I met camping the other day was wiping their tent with something around the edges.

I asked what they were doing and they said they were wiping on oil of peppermint which when smelt by some small creatures (moles, gophers, lizards etc) mucks around with their receptors and makes them recieve "shock like" electrical signals to their brains which in turn makes them run away.

Well be damned if I saw a mole do exactly that at this womans tent two mornings later. It sniffed around the door of the tent, sort of shook its head and bailed. There were mole (gopher?) holes all over the place and we actually pitched our tents right next to several holes. We saw these creatures coming out and pulling grass back into their burrows.

Anyhow - might work with cats?????
 
For the guy that posted this thread, I had the same issue with my own cats, they loved sleeping on the hood of my truck. For me just backing into my driveway was enough, it slopes gently down and it is short, so the weird angle and proximity to the street were enough to keep the cats off. If that won't do it I would try the moth ball thing and spray them quicky with a hose if you catch them, just make sure they are off the car first. If you put a bad memory in their mind they will eventually stay away.

As for the people that suggested hurting the cats, you're all idiots, why don't you keep stupid comments like those to yourselves.
 
Yeah --- taking our your frustrations on the animal isn't exactly the best thing to do .... the animal doesn't know any better. Take out your frustrations on the animal's owner.

For example --- when I am over at a friend's house and my friend's dog starts screwin with me, I don't hit the dog. I calmly stand up, roll up a newspaper/magazine/etc, and whack the owner on the nose while saying "no!! ... bad owner...".

Yes.. It is the driver of the vehicle makes an accident to happen, not the vehicle. Vehicle is also a victom of an accident.
 
And what should be done with STRAY CATS?

There is no owner to locate and as I stated, Animal Control would only take the animal once it was caught.

I solved my problem with sticky rat traps around the outer perimeter along with repellant spray. Then I put rat poison around the inner area in case any pests got through the outer defense.

As I said, I LOVE animals. I however WILL NOT allow any stray vermin to damage my brand new $40,000 vehicle any more than they already have! :mad:
 
That cat repellent looks like it might work... so does the peppermint. I think I might be experimenting over the next few weeks... I may try the moth balls first since they are the most easily obtained.

I would love to park my 4Runner in a garage... if I had one. My house has a car port to park under, but no way to close it off. Like you said, they are expensive, and I regret not being able to protect it better.

Ahh yes... airsoft guns. My college buddy had about 1000 of those little blue balls in his apartment from "wars" with the fully-automatic guns.

Yeah, it is pretty hard to swallow when a small animal can so easily mar such a big investment.

Thing is, that is what's frustrating about cats... the owner really has no control with them. When I lived at home, we couldn't stop our own cat (more specifically, my sister's) from getting on our cars. Really, the only thing the owner can do is keep the cat indoors. But then, of course, the OWNER's possesions could be put in jeopardy, and we just can't have that now can we?

No offense to cat people... I'm just a dog person :)
