Cause for Concern? original plugs @ 79K

Hello All,

I changed my plugs out today with a buddy of mine. Realize I got my rig with 73K on the clock. When I got them out, I noticed Denso plugs from one side of the motor and NDK plugs on the other. I know they come from the factory like this. I also know it doesn't make any sense when the plugs are changed to put in 2 different types of plugs so these MUST BE original. When I changed them, I really didn't notice any difference, but after driving about 30 miles, I put in a tank of 92 octane (I usually put in 87) and she felt VERY peppy and the throttle had a very sharp response. Strangest thing! Doubt it's my idea b/c I wasn't expecting performance improvement. Anyway, I thought I would share and if any "damage" may have been done to the motor?? (my guess is no).

HAHa, my friend told me basically the same, only he told me to shut up and enjoy. I just find it insane that the last owner NEVER changed the plugs.... urghhhh :wtf:
Anyway, I Didn't feel any difference until AFTER I put in the more expensive gas...... even though its been discussed ad nauseam in EVERY car forum, I'm going to see how much "better" mileage I get (or don't)

I just changed mine out too at 55k. I didn't notice an increase in MPG, but it does idle smoother and seems to have brought back the pep.

They probably didn't change them since most of the toyota shops think they come with 100K plugs like mine. Toyota of Manhattan Beach (I bought mine from John Elway) told me they have the 100k plugs from the factory. I asked them to check when they did my 30K service. The service guy reported back to me that they were. After reading on this forum I decided to check them myself. Guess what? They were the Denso/NGK combo.

I encourage you to follow through... Be patient and come to your own conclusion. The 4Runner is a "slow learner" (not that there's anything wrong with that:lmao: )

As much as I like Toyota, sometimes you run into a Toy Tech who has no idea. I make it priority to inform what EXACTLY needs to be done. My next "big" item is to the tranny drain/fill (or flush, whatever Toyota recommends) AT THE DEALER! I really don't feel like burning my hand/arm doing it. Anyway, the plugs are easy enough to DIY. My friend didn't take anything off of the top of the motor to get to them......... amazing. He was done in 10 minutes. I couldn't believe it!! (he used to work at Toyota)
