Word of caution: I just got back from getting an oil change at Firestone Complete Auto Care ($16.99 plus tax, so yeah I'm too lazy for that price to do it myself), and their computer system as of today has a mistake on oil capacities for the V-6 2003 and up. It lists 6.5 quarts capacity (which is the V-8 capacity) instead. There happened to be a 3rd gen 4runner getting an oil change who overheard me, but their capacities seem to match up with the owners manual o.k., so it looks like 2003 and up only V-6's.
When I checked the dipstick when I got back home, it was obviously high, so I went back to the shop, had it drained and refilled with new oil with the correct amount just to make sure instead of just draining off the excess myself. No bubbles or foam, so it wasn't high enough for crank agitation, and just the trip home and back so it was caught in time. When they confirmed the mistake, the local Firestone sent an email to corporate and made a copy of my owner's manual with the correct engine designations and capacities to make sure the computer gets corrected. However, who knows how long that will take to get fixed on their computers nationwide . This seems to have been a recent error on their computers because it was ok the last time I was in there this spring.
Now I know that many of you want to fill about 92 pages with DIY vs. oil change places (and feel free to do so!!!!), but I thought that just in case anybody with 4th gen V-6's are getting their oil changed at a Firestone soon, they may want to keep an eye out for incorrect oil capacities.
