CB Antenna mounts etc.

For the past month i've been trying to figute out where to mount a CB antenna on my 98 Limited 4x4. At first I was thinking of welding a bracket to the side of my reciever hitch and following the contour of the bumper end and having a mount on the side. Then I moved on to drilling throught the top of the wheel well and come out at the top of the fender with the mount. But both of these have problems with where to run the coaxial and possible corrosion/water resistance problem. So a 6 pack later it came to me. I'm going to use the existing mounts for the rear spoiler and i can just run the coax right in the back hatch. Now, If i can only find a spot to mount the radio. I was considering getting the radio-built-into-the-mic setup because I dont want a crowded cabin. But I also want to be able to talk across town. Has anyone had any experiences with CB amplifiers?

i am going to post up a few pics here for you to see. all the 3rd gens in ne4roc have them set up this way. i have a couple mile range with this set up as well. i purchased the first line of cobra remote mounts. i put the brain under the drivers seat, and the contol/mic goes under there as well until i need it. that was $20 on ebay. lol.

as for the mount, coax and antenna, i went firestik for it all. here is the list. be sure to get all STAINLESS parts.

hood channel mount SS-274
spring H3-heavy duty spring
18' coax from firestik
4' firestik2 antenna.

here are the pics of the final product. it sits high enough over the shell to get good transmission/reception, and with the spring, can take a hell of a beating in the trails from branches and what not, while not moving much at highway speeds.

sweet setup. I did mine a little differently. I also got the cobra compact. It's great for shouting at friends on trips and trails.

that picture isn't a link to a larger copy. is there a spring mount on that thing? if you wheel at all, you will def. need one.

nice look. do you wheel it at all? reason i ask is.....would that rear spoiler be strong enough to with stand the branches and what not pulling on the antenna. i know the spring will help, but...?

regardless, it looks good.

yeah i go out once or twice a month, but i have good paint so i try to avoid thick brush and branches. And if it does break, it's just a plastic bracket, I'll just go buy a new one. My main goal was to have the gate open easily. When I get my roof basket I'm mounting it to that, but changing the antenna to a base-load type(utilizes the roof to radiate the signal).

My antenna setup is like bflooks, but I ran into a problem with highway driving. My antenna would start rocking back and forth like mad. Wacking the shiat out of my truck. I even have what I believe to be a heavy duty spring.

at highway speeds I can cee mine through my sunroof with my rear view. It flops back a little bit, but doesn't make any noise.

I've got the ball, but I'm nervous I'm going to wack a passing car. It just take a slight bump and that baby is a rockin! I think I'm going to move it up and use a shorter antenna.

BTW, I went with the front speaker cobra in dash. I had it tuned by a local shop, and I can get a couple of miles.

i have the heavy duty h3 spring from firestik, and i have minimal sway.

You suck! Just kidding. I'm not sure which spring I have. I bought it online when I bought the firestick. I was told it was a HD spring, but apparently not. I guess I need to check out a new spring.

or you could just tether the antenna to something on the back like the rear spoiler,if you have one, or the roof rack

this is a good idea. i have heard of it being done before as well. not sure how it would look, but it would work.

i have a wilson little will the spring and fiberglass are not a good choise in radio stuff. gives a weak signal, the will has proved itself time and time again. almost indestructible. i have had the same one in the deep woods for six years. i run 73 watts and have had no problem.

i wouldnt do the rear spoiler... when you open the hatch youll run into a problem
I have it on the spoiler, no problems at all. It's all in how you make and mount the bracket. If i were to add a roof basket then it would hit. but when I do that, I'll just mount the antenna to the basket.

heres my cb and mount/antenna...
