CB Radio / PA setup

I just recently installed a uniden PC 78 Ultra CB and a wilson FGT fiberglass 4ft antenna. I figured I would post the end result incase anyone was also thinking about getting a CB / large antenna on the back. Also, since it was a feature of my CB, I also installed a PA (public address) power horn under the hood. If anyone has any questions on how I installed it or anything just ask (i never drill into the body or run wires through the firewall, all of these are hidden around the car under panels and such that I did not have to remove.

u didnt drill any holes?...lucky u...of course...mine is a 94...so im not too worried about asthetics...but now i have 3 holes on the top of the front fender cuz i kept drillin into the frame...i thought my aim was good...guess not...

my question is...with the PA horn...how is that connected?...is it just runnin off the power goin to the CB?...or does it have its own power?...

also...how did u decide on where to mount the CB inside?...i put screwed mine into the glove box...on the outside...is yours bolted down?...or just restin there?...

i guess i did forget to mention i did have to screw 2 small holes into the side of the center console (only way to attach the cb). I decided to mount the cb there because it is not really in anyones way and i can easily use it while driving. The pa is connected to the back of the cb (how it gets its power) and that cable is run underneath of the glove box, out the door and into a hole that goes into the hood, then I bolted the horn to the front right wheel well

aight...cuz i wanna get the horn...and since my dad is a truck driver...he gets a bunch of that stuff for free...so thats a bonus...

Wow they still make CB radios. I thought they were antiques. 10-4 good buddy I think we have our selfs a convoy of 35yr old vehicles.

Most 4WD clubs insist on them since Cell phone coverage is not adequate when doing most remote 4 -wheeling, and satelite phones are not available to everyone yet. Larger units like this will have more transmit power to get better reach.

And the big trucks still use them so you can listen in for traffic reports, etc. Has come in very handy to avoid traffic jams, speed traps ...

i use it alot drivin from cali to colorado...and since i live in the mountains...after a snow storm...truckers will keep eachother updated on what goin on...plus...we can talk about all the stupid fuckin drivers on the road...

Set up looks good, I put mine on the back of the console between the seats with Velcro. The radio stays put believe it or not. I ran my antenna wire under the seat, down under the driver side floor panel, under the back seats and out the back hatch as well, but I use a wilson 1000 with a magnet so I can take it off when I am not using it. The only thing I do not like about the magnetic antenna is it scratches the crap out of the roof, but I am currently working on a remedy for that.

I knew a guy that used his to get the attention of women walking by, he later had all four tires slashed by an angry boyfriend (I watched the angry boyfriend do it) He decided to take his PA out... (actually the guy's Dad ripped it out) just thought I would share that. I thought that was hilarious at the time.

In other related PA stories a friend of mine in high school used to drive around campus making interesting remarks at the ladies. Campus police quickly put a stop to that (my high school shared space on a college campus).

I also have a CB radio in my 4Runner. I'll try to snap a photo of it this weekend, but it is just "hanging" there and has yet to move or fall.

I bent a coat hanger to make two "hooks" and then wound it around the bracket that is attached to the CB. I have it hanging sideways over the right side of the center console and connected it (by using a cigar lighter plug) to the 12v power outlet.

I used two napkins to keep the coat hanger from scracthing the surface near the right-side cup holder.


I have a magnet-mount antenna on the roof, with the wire coming down through the left-rear door's weather stripping and then behind/under the driver's seat & up under the back of the CB radio unit.

It seems to work just fine, but I only use it on long trips where I may want to listen for "bear alerts" or other traffic information. CB radios are also nice when you are bored and just want someone to talk with while passing time.
