No, well not legally. I'm sure there is a way someone found to unlock a radio to make it operate in the CB band but I don't suggest doing that.

Most dual band mobile ham radios are VHF/UHF (Very high frequency/Ultra high frequency. The Cb band is within the HF (High Frequency). Almost all mobile Ham radios operate beyond the legal limit of output for the CB anyways.

Thanks for the answer. Other than reaching out much further with a ham than a CB is there any benefit to have a ham for trial rides where a CB has sufficient power to be able to communicate?

Are their channels or frequencies that are regular monitored where you could report an emergency?

That is the main advantage of a HAM. You can find active frequencies and report an emergency. In fact HAM operators are often used by Counties as back up emergency communications radio operators. On a CB if you are in a remote area even on Channel 9 you will still only have a range of a couple miles and may not be heard. HAM radio on the other hand has a several mile range and with use of a repeater can get as far as a couple hundred miles.

Around here nobody even monitors channel 9 on the CB, every time I turn it on it is usually the typical CB arguments.
Ham operators are very important in disaster situations. Hurricane Katrina is a great example of how Ham operators are used when there is no other means of communication. There was even Hams from where I live (Portland, OR) relaying messages. Well back to the point, the FCC and other agencies actually monitor the Ham bands. The only thing that the FCC care about as far as CB communications is that nobody is exceeding the frequency allocations.
 
Today I just had a situation where HAM helped a guy out of a bad situation. I was monitoring a local repeater when I heard a guy calling for help. He came across another guy who rolled his jeep and was up there for two days. He could hardly stand. There is no cell service up there so I called it in to the 911 center for him. He is lucky that I was able to get help on the way for him considering I am about 70 miles away.
 
I have VHF/UHF but there is no room in the truck. I use Motorola Gear. big clunky and dependable.
I have portables i can use for caravanning and such... thing is most use CB.. so if i need to communicate i might have to break down and buy a CB

you have a fine looking truck there... good going on the radio install... i think if i ever go trail riding with my buddies i'll just have to either get a portable CB(not worth much) or get one and use the cig lighter for power they dont draw much.

actually i think that some places require that you have a CB..

The moab group trip I went on in may required a CB. They didn't care what kind, just that you had one in the truck somewhere. I would definitely get one, they are just awesome when you have a line of 20 trucks that can all talk to each other and relay info.
 
Looks very clean! Pretty much any Japanese manufacturer is good IMO, Yaesu, Kenwood, Motorola, Etc.
I love my yaesu though, haven't had one problem to date.
 
I think i made the right choice too. I like my runner... and i doubt the GMC forums are as much fun as it is in here.

I'll have to look around and see who has it and who does not.. I think the 2 local repeaters have it but i think are private. to acess.
