Yeah after my accedent I took the money and complete rebuilt the front suspension so I've been driving around with a huge hole in the front. Kind of an eyesore so I'm hoping to get the front going soon!

The rear is much tighter on to the rear crossmember than the full plate and the fact that it weighs a huge fraction of the plate

Then I would go with the plate bumper. The idea behind this bumper is to be light and easy. The cutting really isn't that big of a deal. Rear bumper covers are pretty cheap.

The only viable option I can see for that is something like this:
Where the tubes kind of extend up around to the wheel arch and to the top of the bumper, and that would be.. well, IMO at least, really ugly. Now, if there was some of that drilled plating like on the back, it could be made to work, but at that point, I don't know how much weight reduction you'd really be getting or if it'd even be worth it to go with the hybrid over the added protection of the full plate.

^very good point. I've taken some hits on this bumper on some little drop offs and ledges and it is honestly the perfect amount of protection. The side hoops much like the 5th gen bumper will cover the sides very well.

I didn't mean to knock CBI for poor protection or anything, they make great products. I'm just stating that, although most probably won't need it, it is physically weaker than the full plate. I do agree, though, that the bumper is great for those not wanting to kill their wallet, not only on a $2300 full plate bumper, but with the added suspension needed to offset the weight and the gas milage drop due to it. I also will admit that, for most, this is probably the best option. The thing is made out of steel, and, tubing or not, steel is strong lol. Not to mention, the factory cover can take quite a few hits, and this is definitely strong than that.

Departure angle?
[MENTION=76617]shallcallhimtim[/MENTION] - When you get a chance, can you measure the departure angle for us? If you have a protractor and a 4X8 sheet of something it should be really easy. Just lay the board up against the tires and raise it til it hits the hitch (what I'm assuming would be the lowest point).
It'll obviously be hard to know the before but I can take a measurment of my bumper top ledge to the bottom of the stock hitch and we can work out the difference pretty easily.
Just looking for a before and after. Seems like a new rear crossmember is the only way to net a really good improvement but I'm curious what this option will do for folks. The tire carrier has me a bit more interested.

It would probably look ugly to most people. I personally like the look. (Seen it before somewhere on a 4th gen) I'm probably alone in that though.

Im don't remember what it is called but it has a gel core or something in it that helps it form to the body. It should be included in the kit with the bumper.

Aha of course man! I want to get the ball rolling just as much as you! 4Runners need more options for both front and rear but i know how the production of new things can take a little time,, Trust me i've been patiently awaiting to see what was going to happen with the rear since you first posted it up..
