CBI Front Bumper

Dropped my truck off at CBI on monday for a new bumper. Here is the progress so far.

The air bag sensors are still there. Problem is the bumper is much more rigid then the plastic one. So it will take a larger impact to get them to deploy.

That is completely false. The airbag sensors are measuring deceleration speed, not force of impact.

That being said, the bumper looks pretty nice!
 
Is that Bumper Air Bag compatible?

All bumpers are "air bag compatible" in the sense that the airbag sensors are not in the bumper at all, but in the frame. This will absolutely affect your crumple zones. Whether or not this improves or worsens safety is data that we don't have.

The amount of collisions that I've seen with aftermarket bumpers make me believe that it doesn't worsen your safety and it may improve low speed impacts in terms of damage to the vehicle.

I stand corrected. So I don't know how they will react. The sensors are still installed according to CBI.
 
The deformation of the OEM bumper will cause a slower the rate of deceleration. The more rigid bumper should cause the sensors to register/trigger faster.
 
Because it's made of metal not plastic. They are based on shock and g-force of deceleration...

Makes sense, but underneath the plastic cover is a metal bar. I can't imagine it affecting things in any great magnitude; I could be totally wrong though.

Ok. So what we need is somebody with a stock bumper, and somebody with a CBI bumper.
We need you guys to run head on into each other starting at 5mph. Speed increases 5mph until a airbag pops. Then we will know for sure.

There is an aluminum bumper with 2 hollow tubes connecting the bumper to the frame, which are designed to 'gently' crush in an impact. Most aftermarket bumpers remove those tubes and will transfer more energy into the frame in the same impact, compared to the stock bumper.

As far as I know, ARB is the only aftermarket bumper which retains the tubes.

Close. ARB does not retain the factory "crush zone". It actually replaces it with design engineered components that will work with their bumpers.

Obviously this is for a 3rd gen but the same concept is used for all of their bumpers with the exception of the Heeps. Their crush zone is actually a part of the frame in the front. Which you see this guy cutting off.
